## What it does

This skill covers log aggregation with Grafana Loki end to end. It ships a `docker-compose.yml` with Loki, Promtail and Grafana, plus `loki-config.yaml` and `promtail-config.yaml` you can adapt. For Kubernetes there is a Helm install of the `loki-stack` chart and a Promtail DaemonSet manifest.

The LogQL section starts with label selectors and line filters, then moves to JSON parsing, metric queries like `rate` and `count_over_time`, and aggregations such as `quantile_over_time` and `topk`. Promtail pipeline stages show how to parse JSON, pull fields out with a regex and promote them to labels.

You need Docker or Kubernetes, Grafana for visualization, and Promtail or another log shipper. The sample Loki config stores chunks on the filesystem with a 168h retention period, so check that against your own volume and retention needs before copying it into production.

## Requirements
- Works with: Kubernetes, Grafana

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill loki-logging -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/loki-logging/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/loki-logging/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill loki-logging -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/loki-logging/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill loki-logging -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/loki-logging/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills loki-logging
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/loki-logging/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill loki-logging -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path devops/observability/loki-logging
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/loki-logging/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill loki-logging -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- stand up Loki and Promtail with Docker Compose
- write a LogQL query that counts errors per service
- collect Docker container logs and tag them with labels
- deploy the logging stack to Kubernetes with Helm
- parse JSON app logs and promote the level field to a label

## Example prompts
- Set up log collection in Kubernetes with Loki and Promtail
- Write a LogQL query showing the error rate over the last 5 minutes
- Add JSON parsing and a level label to the Promtail pipeline

# Grafana Loki

Aggregate and query logs with Grafana Loki, the Prometheus-inspired logging system.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Implementing cost-effective log aggregation
- Building logging for Kubernetes environments
- Integrating logs with Grafana dashboards
- Querying logs with label-based filtering
- Preferring lighter-weight alternative to ELK

## Prerequisites

- Docker or Kubernetes
- Grafana for visualization
- Promtail or other log shipper
