## What it does

The skill covers adding Locomotive Scroll with `npm`, setting up a `data-scroll-container`, and grouping content in `data-scroll-section` blocks. It guides the agent through smooth scroll settings, in-view detection, visibility classes, and scroll event handling.

It uses `data-scroll-speed` and `data-scroll-direction` for parallax, plus `data-scroll-sticky` and `data-scroll-target` for pinned content. The guide also covers `scrollTo`, `scroll` and `call` events, horizontal scrolling, and GSAP ScrollTrigger integration.

Scroll hijacking can affect accessibility, and lower-end devices carry extra performance cost. That is a reason to provide a way to disable the effect and test touch scrolling carefully. Fixed positioning needs workarounds too.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --skill locomotive-scroll -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/locomotive-scroll/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/locomotive-scroll/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --skill locomotive-scroll -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/locomotive-scroll/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --skill locomotive-scroll -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/locomotive-scroll/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install freshtechbro/claudedesignskills locomotive-scroll
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/locomotive-scroll/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --skill locomotive-scroll -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --path plugins/bundles/extended-3d-scroll/skills/locomotive-scroll
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/locomotive-scroll/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --skill locomotive-scroll -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- add Locomotive Scroll to a project
- create parallax with `data-scroll-speed`
- trigger motion when an element enters the viewport
- pin an element inside a section
- scroll to a target with `scrollTo`

## Example prompts
- “Set up Locomotive Scroll with `data-scroll-container` on this page.”
- “Add a parallax section using `data-scroll-speed` with horizontal movement.”
- “Track the `hero` section with the `scroll` event and connect it to GSAP ScrollTrigger.”

# Locomotive Scroll

Comprehensive guide for implementing smooth scrolling, parallax effects, and scroll-driven animations using Locomotive Scroll.

## Overview

Locomotive Scroll is a JavaScript library that provides:
- **Smooth scrolling**: Hardware-accelerated smooth scroll with customizable easing
- **Parallax effects**: Element-level speed control for depth
- **Viewport detection**: Track when elements enter/exit viewport
- **Scroll events**: Monitor scroll progress for animation synchronization
- **Sticky elements**: Pin elements within defined boundaries
- **Horizontal scrolling**: Support for horizontal scroll layouts

**When to use Locomotive Scroll:**
- Building immersive landing pages with parallax
- Creating smooth, Apple-style scroll experiences
- Implementing scroll-triggered animations
- Developing narrative/storytelling websites
- Adding depth and motion to long-form content

**Trade-offs:**
- Scroll-hijacking can impact accessibility (provide disable option)
- Performance overhead on low-end devices (detect and disable)
- Mobile touch scrolling feels different (test extensively)
- Fixed positioning requires workarounds

## Installation

```bash
npm install locomotive-scroll
```

```javascript
// ES6
import LocomotiveScroll from 'locomotive-scroll';
import 'locomotive-scroll/dist/locomotive-scroll.css';
// Or via CDN
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/locomotive-scroll/dist/locomotive-scroll.min.css">
<script src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/locomotive-scroll/dist/locomotive-scroll.min.js"></script>
```

## Core Concepts

### 1. HTML Structure

Every Locomotive Scroll implementation requires specific data attributes:

```html
<!-- Scroll container (required) -->
<div data-scroll-container>
  <!-- Scroll sections (optional, improves performance) -->
  <div data-scroll-section>
    <!-- Tracked elements -->
    <h1 data-scroll>Basic detection</h1>
    <!-- Parallax element -->
    <div data-scroll data-scroll-speed="2">
      Moves faster than scroll
    </div>
    <!-- Sticky element -->
    <div data-scroll data-scroll-sticky>
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the a75f445eb6eccfc9 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
