## What it does

The skill calls the `place_search` endpoint of the Brave Search API. You give it a query and a place: either `latitude` plus `longitude`, or a `location` string such as `tokyo japan`. Omit both and the search runs globally, which costs you precision. Omit the query, the coordinates and the location string together and you get HTTP 422.

The response is split into buckets: `results` for businesses, plus `cities`, `countries`, `regions`, `neighborhoods`, `addresses` and `streets`. An address-shaped query can come back with an empty `results` and every match sitting in `addresses` or `streets`. The `count` parameter caps items across all buckets, 20 by default and 100 at most. `radius` is a bias in meters, not a hard cutoff, so some results will fall outside it.

You need an API key from Brave and the Search plan with the `locations` option. The key travels in the `X-Subscription-Token` header. The skill stands alone: no POI IDs from an earlier web search are required, and the `id` values it returns last roughly 8 hours and work with `local-pois` and `local-descriptions`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add brave/brave-search-skills --skill local-place-search -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/local-place-search/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/local-place-search/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add brave/brave-search-skills --skill local-place-search -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/local-place-search/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add brave/brave-search-skills --skill local-place-search -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/local-place-search/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install brave/brave-search-skills local-place-search
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/local-place-search/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add brave/brave-search-skills --skill local-place-search -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/brave/brave-search-skills --path skills/local-place-search
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/local-place-search/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add brave/brave-search-skills --skill local-place-search -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- find coffee shops near a pair of coordinates
- get a business address and phone without a follow-up call
- pull street and address matches from a text query
- browse what POIs exist in an area with no query at all
- pass a POI id into `local-pois` for details

## Example prompts
- find coffee shops near latitude 37.7749, longitude -122.4194, radius 5000
- find sushi restaurants in tokyo japan, country JP
- show POIs around latitude 48.8566, longitude 2.3522, country FR

# Place Search (Search API)

> **Requires API Key**: Get one at https://api.search.brave.com
>
> **Plan**: Included in the **Search** plan (with `locations` option). See https://api-dashboard.search.brave.com/app/subscriptions/subscribe
>
> **Standalone**: Unlike `local-pois` and `local-descriptions`, this endpoint does **not** require POI IDs from a prior web search. You provide a location and an optional query directly.

## Quick Start (cURL)

### Search by Query + Coordinates

```bash
curl -s "https://api.search.brave.com/res/v1/local/place_search" \
  -H "Accept: application/json" \
  -H "Accept-Encoding: gzip" \
  -H "X-Subscription-Token: ${BRAVE_SEARCH_API_KEY}" \
  --data-urlencode "q=sushi restaurants" \
  --data-urlencode "location=tokyo japan" \
  --data-urlencode "country=JP" \
  --data-urlencode "search_lang=en"
