# local-dev

A skill for local MCP server work: install dependencies, build the TypeScript workspaces, and start a server over stdio, SSE or Streamable HTTP.

## What it does

The skill walks from a fresh checkout to a running server. It holds the install and build commands, a run table for `everything`, `filesystem`, `memory`, `sequentialthinking`, `fetch`, `git` and `time`, and a section on what breaks along the way. TypeScript servers want Node 24; Python servers want `uv`. A root `npm install` also builds all four TypeScript workspaces, since each one's `prepare` script is its build.

Python servers skip the separate install step: `uv run` creates the `.venv` on first use and installs the server in editable mode. A fresh git worktree starts empty, because `node_modules`, every `dist/` and every `.venv` are untracked, so run `npm install` at the worktree root before anything else. With no `MEMORY_FILE_PATH`, `memory` writes its graph file next to the built module, inside `dist/`; point the variable at a temporary file for local runs, or a test graph outlives the session in the build.

Another section covers stale code. TypeScript runs from `dist/`, so an edit does nothing until a rebuild, and a stdio client keeps the process it already spawned. Deleting a source file leaves the old `.js` behind, because `tsc` does not clean. The skill also covers `overrides` pins in the root `package.json` and the `npm run verify:dep-lockstep` guard.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill local-dev -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/local-dev/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/local-dev/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill local-dev -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/local-dev/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill local-dev -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/local-dev/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install modelcontextprotocol/servers local-dev
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/local-dev/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill local-dev -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers --path .claude/skills/local-dev
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/local-dev/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/servers --skill local-dev -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/local-dev/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a TypeScript server from the checkout and start it over stdio
- point an MCP client config at a local build via `npx` or `uvx`
- work out why a server still serves old code after an edit
- set up a fresh git worktree with no `node_modules` and no `dist/`
- pin a transitive dependency with `overrides` in the root manifest

## Example prompts
- build every workspace and start `everything` over stdio
- why does `filesystem` still serve old code after my edit?
- add an `overrides` pin for a transitive dependency, then build and test

# Local development

The short form of the commands, and the dependency **rules**, are in
[`AGENTS.md`](../../../AGENTS.md) under **Development setup**. This skill is
how to get a server running from the checkout, and what goes wrong on the way.
Driving a running server with a client is `/client-smoke`; tests are
`/testing`.

## Install and build

Node 24 (the development version, and the oldest supported) for the
TypeScript servers, and `uv` for the Python ones.

```sh
npm install        # at the repo root: all four TypeScript workspaces
npm run build      # every workspace; or: npm run build -w src/<server>
```

Each workspace's `prepare` script is its build, so a root `npm install` also
builds every TypeScript server. `tsc` writes each server's `dist/`, which is
ignored by git and is what every run command below executes.

The Python servers need no separate install step. `uv run` creates the
server's `.venv` on first use, at the Python version its `.python-version`
pins, and installs the server into it in editable mode.

⚠️ **A fresh git worktree has none of this.** `node_modules`, every `dist/`
and every `.venv` are untracked, so a new worktree starts with no installed
dependencies and no build. Run `npm install` at the worktree's root before
anything else; the first `uv run` in a Python server builds its environment.

## Run a server

Every server speaks stdio. A stdio server started by hand waits for JSON-RPC
on stdin, so on its own this only shows that it boots; to send it requests,
use `/client-smoke`. The TypeScript servers print a startup banner on stderr
first. The Python servers print nothing at the default log level, so a silent
terminal is a running server, not a hung one.

| Server | From the repo root | Arguments and environment |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `everything` | `node src/everything/dist/index.js stdio` | First argument picks the transport: `stdio` (the default), `sse`, `streamableHttp` |

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 4f2fe331de867466 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
