## What it does

The skill hands the agent a set of rules for resource load order. Critical CSS and font CSS get inlined, external fonts get `preconnect`. Scripts take `async` or `defer`, and images below the fold are lazy-loaded.

The reasoning: FCP should fire before LCP, and LCP before FID. So resources needed for first paint come first, then whatever LCP depends on, then everything that unblocks interaction. First-party JS starts fetching before above-the-fold images. The skill also covers why this is hard in practice — browsers prioritise requests differently, Chromium has known behaviour around `<link rel=preload>`, and HTTP/2 gives no predictable ordering once a CDN is involved.

It runs in a fork context with only `Read`, `Grep` and `Glob` available, so it reads and suggests rather than editing files. It triggers on `**/*.js` and `**/*.ts`. If your page carries heavy third-party scripts, this is a reason to check how they sit in the load queue.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill loading-sequence -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/loading-sequence/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/loading-sequence/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill loading-sequence -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/loading-sequence/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill loading-sequence -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/loading-sequence/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PatternsDev/skills loading-sequence
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/loading-sequence/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill loading-sequence -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PatternsDev/skills --path javascript/loading-sequence
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/loading-sequence/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill loading-sequence -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- reorder critical resources so FCP fires before LCP
- move third-party scripts off the critical path
- unblock interactivity held up by heavy JS execution
- set up preconnect and inline CSS for fonts
- split above-the-fold and below-the-fold images by priority

## Example prompts
- check the resource load order on this page and tell me what to reorder
- why is our LCP slow — look at the order of CSS, fonts and JS
- go through the third-party scripts and flag the ones hurting load

# Optimize your loading sequence

In every successful web page load, some critical components and resources become available at just the right time to give you a smooth loading experience. This ensures users perceive the performance of the application to be excellent. This excellent user experience should generally also translate to passing the [Core Web Vitals](https://web.dev/vitals/).

## When to Use

- Use this when optimizing page load performance for Core Web Vitals
- This is helpful when you need to coordinate the loading of 1P JS, 3P JS, CSS, fonts, and images
- Use this when third-party scripts are impacting your loading performance

## Instructions

- Inline critical CSS and font CSS; use preconnect for external fonts
- Sequence resources so FCP fires before LCP, and LCP fires before FID
- Start fetching first-party JS before ATF images on the network
- Use `async` or `defer` attributes for non-critical scripts
- Lazy-load below-the-fold images and non-essential third-party resources

## Details

Key [metrics](https://web.dev/metrics/) such as [First Content Paint](https://web.dev/fcp/), [Largest Contentful Paint](https://web.dev/lcp/), [First Input Delay](https://web.dev/fid/), etc used to measure performance are directly dependent on the loading sequence of critical resources. For example, the page cannot have its LCP if a critical resource like the [hero image](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero_image) is not loaded. This article talks about the relationship between the loading sequence of resources and web vitals. Our objective is to provide clear guidance on how to optimize the loading sequence for better web vitals.

Before we establish an ideal loading sequence, let us first try to understand why it is so difficult to get the loading sequence right.

### Why is optimal loading difficult to achieve?

We have had the unique opportunity to work on performance analysis for many of our partner's websites. We identified multiple similar issues that plagued the efficient loading of pages across different partner sites.
