Configures traffic distribution, SSL termination, and health checks across backend servers. Useful when scaling web applications horizontally behind a single endpoint.

## What it does

The skill provides templates and CLI workflows to distribute HTTP and HTTPS traffic across multiple application instances. It covers nginx configurations (round-robin, weighted backends, sticky sessions via ip_hash), an HAProxy setup with path-based routing for `/api/` and `/ws/`, and AWS Application Load Balancer provisioning via `aws elbv2`.

Prerequisites include at least two backend servers running the same application and a valid TLS certificate from ACM, Let's Encrypt, or self-signed. If you deploy on AWS, a VPC with public and private subnets across multiple availability zones is necessary. For standalone Linux setups, root access is required to modify configs and reload services.

Runtime management in HAProxy, such as draining servers or switching maintenance states, relies on sending commands to `/var/run/haproxy/admin.sock` using `socat`.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill load-balancing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/load-balancing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/load-balancing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill load-balancing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/load-balancing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill load-balancing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/load-balancing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills load-balancing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/load-balancing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill load-balancing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path infrastructure/networking/load-balancing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/load-balancing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill load-balancing -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- route HTTP and HTTPS traffic across backend pools
- terminate TLS at nginx or HAProxy endpoints
- provision an AWS Application Load Balancer and target groups via CLI
- drain servers and perform health checks without dropping active connections

## Example prompts
- Set up an nginx reverse proxy upstream using least_conn and a backup server
- Generate an HAProxy configuration routing /api/ and /ws/ traffic to separate backends
- Provide the aws elbv2 commands to build an internet-facing ALB with health checks

# Load Balancing

Distribute traffic across application servers for high availability, scalability, and fault tolerance.

## When to Use

- Distributing HTTP/HTTPS traffic across multiple backend servers.
- Implementing health checks to route around unhealthy instances.
- Terminating TLS at the load balancer for simplified certificate management.
- Enabling blue/green or canary deployments with traffic shifting.
- Scaling horizontally behind a single entry point.

## Prerequisites

- Two or more backend servers running the same application.
- TLS certificate for HTTPS termination (ACM, Let's Encrypt, or self-signed for internal).
- For AWS: VPC with public and private subnets across availability zones.
- For nginx/HAProxy: Linux server with root access.

## nginx Load Balancer

### Basic Round-Robin

```nginx
# /etc/nginx/conf.d/loadbalancer.conf
upstream app_backend {
    server 10.0.1.10:8080;
    server 10.0.1.11:8080;
    server 10.0.1.12:8080;
}
server {
    listen 80;
    server_name app.example.com;
    return 301 https://$host$request_uri;
}
server {
    listen 443 ssl http2;
    server_name app.example.com;
    ssl_certificate     /etc/ssl/certs/app.example.com.pem;
    ssl_certificate_key /etc/ssl/private/app.example.com-key.pem;
    ssl_protocols       TLSv1.2 TLSv1.3;
    ssl_ciphers         HIGH:!aNULL:!MD5;
    location / {
        proxy_pass http://app_backend;
        proxy_set_header Host $host;
        proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
        proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
        proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
        proxy_connect_timeout 5s;
        proxy_read_timeout 30s;
        proxy_send_timeout 30s;
    }
    location /health {
        access_log off;
        return 200 "OK";
    }
}
```

### Weighted and Backup Servers

```nginx
upstream app_backend {
    least_conn;  # Route to server with fewest active connections
    server 10.0.1.10:8080 weight=5;      # Gets 5x traffic
    server 10.0.1.11:8080 weight=3;      # Gets 3x traffic
    server 10.0.1.12:8080 weight=1;      # Gets 1x traffic
    server 10.0.1.20:8080 backup;        # Only used when others are down
    server 10.0.1.21:8080 down;          # Temporarily removed from pool
}
```

### Health Checks (nginx Plus / OpenResty)

```nginx
upstream app_backend {
````
