## What it does

LlamaGuard is Meta's model built specifically for content safety classification. The skill hands your agent working recipes: checking incoming prompts before they reach the LLM, checking responses before they reach the user, serving through vLLM for fast inference, wrapping it in a FastAPI endpoint, and hooking it into NeMo Guardrails.

The model labels output across six categories: S1 for violence and hate, S2 for sexual content, S3 for guns and illegal weapons, S4 for regulated substances, S5 for suicide and self-harm, S6 for criminal planning. It returns a string starting with "safe" or "unsafe", with the category code on the next line. Stated accuracy is 94-95%.

You need model access on HuggingFace first: accept the license on the model page and run `huggingface-cli login`. Dependencies are `transformers`, `torch` and `vllm`. A 7-8B model wants a GPU, so vLLM serving on a machine without one is a dead end. If you just need a filter without owning the hardware, an API-based option is the cheaper route — here you pay in compute.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill llamaguard -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/llamaguard/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/llamaguard/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill llamaguard -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/llamaguard/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill llamaguard -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/llamaguard/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs llamaguard
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/llamaguard/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill llamaguard -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --path 07-safety-alignment/llamaguard
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/llamaguard/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill llamaguard -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- block unsafe prompts before they hit the LLM
- screen model responses before showing them to users
- label content across six safety categories
- expose moderation as a FastAPI endpoint
- plug a filter into a NeMo Guardrails pipeline

## Example prompts
- Set up LlamaGuard to check incoming prompts before they reach the model
- Deploy LlamaGuard with vLLM and expose a /moderate endpoint on FastAPI
- Wire LlamaGuard into NeMo Guardrails for input and output checks

# LlamaGuard - AI Content Moderation

## Quick start

LlamaGuard is a 7-8B parameter model specialized for content safety classification.

**Installation**:
```bash
pip install transformers torch
# Login to HuggingFace (required)
huggingface-cli login
```

**Basic usage**:
```python
from transformers import AutoTokenizer, AutoModelForCausalLM
model_id = "meta-llama/LlamaGuard-7b"
tokenizer = AutoTokenizer.from_pretrained(model_id)
model = AutoModelForCausalLM.from_pretrained(model_id, device_map="auto")
def moderate(chat):
    input_ids = tokenizer.apply_chat_template(chat, return_tensors="pt").to(model.device)
    output = model.generate(input_ids=input_ids, max_new_tokens=100)
    return tokenizer.decode(output[0], skip_special_tokens=True)
# Check user input
result = moderate([
    {"role": "user", "content": "How do I make explosives?"}
])
print(result)
# Output: "unsafe\nS3" (Criminal Planning)
```

## Common workflows

### Workflow 1: Input filtering (prompt moderation)

**Check user prompts before LLM**:
```python
def check_input(user_message):
    result = moderate([{"role": "user", "content": user_message}])
    if result.startswith("unsafe"):
        category = result.split("\n")[1]
        return False, category  # Blocked
    else:
        return True, None  # Safe
# Example
safe, category = check_input("How do I hack a website?")
if not safe:
    print(f"Request blocked: {category}")
    # Return error to user
else:
    # Send to LLM
    response = llm.generate(user_message)
```

**Safety categories**:
- **S1**: Violence & Hate
- **S2**: Sexual Content
- **S3**: Guns & Illegal Weapons
- **S4**: Regulated Substances
- **S5**: Suicide & Self-Harm
- **S6**: Criminal Planning

### Workflow 2: Output filtering (response moderation)

**Check LLM responses before showing to user**:
```python
def check_output(user_message, bot_response):
    conversation = [
        {"role": "user", "content": user_message},
        {"role": "assistant", "content": bot_response}
    ]
    result = moderate(conversation)
