# linux-shell-scripting

A skill that hands your agent ready bash templates for backups, resource monitoring, user management and log parsing. Useful when you want a working script, not a sketch.

## What it does

The skill plugs into your agent and feeds it templates for everyday Linux administration. Six groups sit inside: file and database backups, CPU and disk monitoring, user creation and password expiry checks, password generation and file encryption with `openssl`, log analysis, and network connectivity checks.

The templates are concrete. A directory backup runs through `tar` with a timestamp in the filename, a remote one through `rsync`, and the rotation script deletes the oldest copies once a count is exceeded. The CPU monitor compares load against a threshold and leaves a slot for your notification logic. The disk check watches one named partition. File encryption goes both ways with `openssl enc -aes-256-cbc` and `-pbkdf2`.

You need Linux or Unix with bash, plus permissions for whatever the task touches. Several scripts lean on `rsync` and `openssl`, so on a bare system they break on a missing utility. The skill also assumes you know the filesystem layout and basic bash — otherwise you copy a template and fill `source_dir` or `backup_dir` with the wrong paths.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill linux-shell-scripting -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/linux-shell-scripting/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/linux-shell-scripting/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill linux-shell-scripting -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/linux-shell-scripting/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill linux-shell-scripting -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/linux-shell-scripting/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install zebbern/claude-code-guide linux-shell-scripting
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/linux-shell-scripting/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill linux-shell-scripting -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/zebbern/claude-code-guide --path skills/linux-shell-scripting
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/linux-shell-scripting/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill linux-shell-scripting -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/zebbern/claude-code-guide/tree/HEAD/skills/linux-shell-scripting/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- back up a directory into a timestamped archive
- rotate old backups once a limit is hit
- dump a database with `mysqldump` and compress it
- alert when CPU or disk crosses a threshold
- create a user with a home directory and bash shell

## Example prompts
- write a bash script that backs up /var/www with rotation of old copies
- make a disk monitor that alerts when a partition passes 90%
- I need a script to encrypt a file with openssl and decrypt it back

# Linux Production Shell Scripts

## Purpose

Provide production-ready shell script templates for common Linux system administration tasks including backups, monitoring, user management, log analysis, and automation. These scripts serve as building blocks for security operations and penetration testing environments.

## Prerequisites

### Required Environment
- Linux/Unix system (bash shell)
- Appropriate permissions for tasks
- Required utilities installed (rsync, openssl, etc.)

### Required Knowledge
- Basic bash scripting
- Linux file system structure
- System administration concepts

## Outputs and Deliverables

1. **Backup Solutions** - Automated file and database backups
2. **Monitoring Scripts** - Resource usage tracking
3. **Automation Tools** - Scheduled task execution
4. **Security Scripts** - Password management, encryption

## Core Workflow

### Phase 1: File Backup Scripts

**Basic Directory Backup**
```bash
#!/bin/bash
backup_dir="/path/to/backup"
source_dir="/path/to/source"
# Create a timestamped backup of the source directory
tar -czf "$backup_dir/backup_$(date +%Y%m%d_%H%M%S).tar.gz" "$source_dir"
echo "Backup completed: backup_$(date +%Y%m%d_%H%M%S).tar.gz"
```

**Remote Server Backup**
```bash
#!/bin/bash
source_dir="/path/to/source"
remote_server="user@remoteserver:/path/to/backup"
# Backup files/directories to a remote server using rsync
rsync -avz --progress "$source_dir" "$remote_server"
echo "Files backed up to remote server."
```

**Backup Rotation Script**
```bash
#!/bin/bash
backup_dir="/path/to/backups"
max_backups=5
# Rotate backups by deleting the oldest if more than max_backups
while [ $(ls -1 "$backup_dir" | wc -l) -gt "$max_backups" ]; do
    oldest_backup=$(ls -1t "$backup_dir" | tail -n 1)
    rm -r "$backup_dir/$oldest_backup"
    echo "Removed old backup: $oldest_backup"
done
echo "Backup rotation completed."
```

**Database Backup Script**
```bash
#!/bin/bash
database_name="your_database"
db_user="username"
db_pass="password"
output_file="database_backup_$(date +%Y%m%d).sql"
# Perform database backup using mysqldump
mysqldump -u "$db_user" -p"$db_pass" "$database_name" > "$output_file"
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the c1581bf9aa1b0013 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
