# linux-administration

A skill for Linux server work: packages, services, disks, processes, cron and logs. Useful when the agent needs to run commands on a server, not just write code.

## What it does

The skill covers everyday sysadmin work: installing and updating packages, managing filesystems and mount points, tracking down runaway processes, scheduling jobs with cron and systemd timers, reading logs. It ships with ready commands for Debian/Ubuntu (`apt`) and RHEL/CentOS/Fedora (`dnf`), plus examples for `lsblk`, `fstab`, `journalctl`, `logrotate` and network tools.

You need root or sudo on the target machine and SSH access already set up. The package manager has to be there too: `apt` on Debian/Ubuntu, `dnf` on RHEL 8+ and Fedora. Without sudo the skill has nothing to work with — the commands simply won't run.

It assumes you're comfortable in a terminal, so basic familiarity with `vim` or `nano` helps. Some examples target specific package versions and distributions, so check the commands against your own system before running them.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill linux-administration -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/linux-administration/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/linux-administration/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill linux-administration -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/linux-administration/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill linux-administration -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/linux-administration/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills linux-administration
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/linux-administration/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill linux-administration -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path infrastructure/servers/linux-administration
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/linux-administration/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill linux-administration -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/infrastructure/servers/linux-administration/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- update packages and clear out unused dependencies
- find which process grabbed a port or ate the memory
- attach a new disk and make it persistent in `fstab`
- set up log rotation for a custom application
- trace an error in journalctl over a given time range

## Example prompts
- Show me which processes are listening on port 80 and who started them
- Set up a daily backup at 2:30 via cron
- Check inode usage on this server — the disk looks free but writes are failing

# Linux Administration

Core Linux system administration skills for managing production servers, development environments, and infrastructure hosts across Debian/Ubuntu and RHEL/CentOS distributions.

## When to Use

- Provisioning and maintaining Linux servers in any environment
- Installing, updating, or removing software packages
- Managing filesystems, disk usage, and mount points
- Investigating runaway processes or high resource consumption
- Scheduling recurring tasks with cron or systemd timers
- Analyzing system and application logs for troubleshooting

## Prerequisites

- Root or sudo access on the target system
- SSH access configured (see `ssh-configuration` skill)
- Familiarity with a terminal text editor (vim, nano)
- Package manager available (`apt` on Debian/Ubuntu, `dnf` on RHEL 8+/Fedora)

## Package Management

### Debian / Ubuntu (apt)

```bash
# Update package index and upgrade all installed packages
apt update && apt upgrade -y
# Search for a package by keyword
apt search nginx
# Show detailed package info including dependencies
apt show nginx
# Install a specific version of a package
apt install nginx=1.24.0-1ubuntu1
# Install multiple packages in one command
apt install -y nginx certbot python3-certbot-nginx
# Remove a package but keep its config files
apt remove nginx
# Remove a package and purge all config files
apt purge nginx
# Remove unused dependency packages
apt autoremove -y
# List all installed packages
dpkg -l | grep nginx
# Pin a package to prevent automatic upgrades
cat <<'EOF' > /etc/apt/preferences.d/pin-nginx
Package: nginx
Pin: version 1.24.0-1ubuntu1
Pin-Priority: 1001
EOF
# Add an external repository (example: Docker CE)
curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu/gpg | gpg --dearmor -o /usr/share/keyrings/docker-archive-keyring.gpg
echo "deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/docker-archive-keyring.gpg] https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu $(lsb_release -cs) stable" \
  > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docker.list
apt update
```

### RHEL / CentOS / Fedora (dnf)

```bash
# Update all packages
dnf update -y
# Search for a package
dnf search nginx
# Show package details
dnf info nginx
# Install a package
dnf install -y nginx
# Install a specific version
dnf install nginx-1.24.0-1.el9
# Remove a package
dnf remove nginx
