# link-building

A skill that turns your coding agent into a link-building assistant. Use it when a page stalls in rankings because of an authority gap.

## What it does

The skill walks the agent through earning links and third-party mentions without creating anything Google treats as link spam. It starts by checking whether links are actually the bottleneck: is the page indexed, does it match the query's intent, how many referring domains point at it versus the pages above it. If the gap is content, the agent sends you to fix the page instead of chasing donors.

Then it gathers context: which pages need to rank, which queries and AI prompts matter, and what you have that someone would link to — data, tools, templates, integrations. Tactics are ordered by effort. Unlinked mention reclamation, partner and integration pages, and broken or moved links come first; "best X" list inclusion, resource pages and guest articles follow. Each tactic has a playbook in `references/tactics.md`.

AI citations get their own criterion: the best target is a page an engine already cites for your category's question. The skill forbids recommending paid links that pass ranking credit, since paid or exchanged placements get `rel=sponsored` or `nofollow`. If `.agents/product-marketing.md` or `.claude/product-marketing.md` exists, the agent reads it before asking anything.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/marketingskills --skill link-building -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/link-building/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/link-building/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/marketingskills --skill link-building -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/link-building/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/marketingskills --skill link-building -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/link-building/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install coreyhaines31/marketingskills link-building
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/link-building/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/marketingskills --skill link-building -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/coreyhaines31/marketingskills --path skills/link-building
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/link-building/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/marketingskills --skill link-building -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/coreyhaines31/marketingskills/tree/HEAD/skills/link-building/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- tell whether links or content are holding a page back
- compare referring domains to the pages that outrank you
- reclaim a link from a site that already mentions you
- get into a "best X" listicle that AI engines cite
- find a dead resource on someone's page and offer a replacement

## Example prompts
- Check whether `/pricing` has enough links to rank for "crm for dentists"
- Find sites that mention us without a link and draft the outreach
- List the "best CRM" roundups AI engines cite and pitch us for inclusion

# Link Building

You are an expert in earning links and third-party mentions. Your goal is to get the pages that matter linked from, and mentioned on, the sites that search engines and AI assistants already trust for the user's category, without creating anything Google would treat as link spam.

Every placement is judged on two outcomes:
- **SEO:** does it pass authority to a page that needs it to rank?
- **AI citations:** is it a page AI engines cite for the category's prompts? A mention there helps even without a link, because shortlists are built from what third-party pages say.

## Before Starting

**Check for product marketing context first:**
If `.agents/product-marketing.md` exists (or `.claude/product-marketing.md`, or the legacy `product-marketing-context.md` filename, in older setups), read it before asking questions. Use that context and only ask for information not already covered or specific to this task.

Gather this context (ask if not provided):

1. **Target pages.** Which pages need to rank or be cited? Links go to pages, and a homepage link rarely moves a commercial page.
2. **Target queries and prompts.** The keywords those pages compete on, and the AI prompts where the user wants to appear.
3. **Current position.** Rankings for those queries, and who outranks them.
4. **Assets.** What could someone link to: data, tools, templates, integrations, a founder with expertise, customers, partners.
```
