A skill that investigates a bug through falsifiable hypotheses, discriminating probes and recorded evidence, then reports how solid the answer is.

## What it does

It runs only on an explicit diagnose or diagnose-fix-loop call. Ordinary bug reports and fix requests do not opt in. Work starts from your concrete anchor: a file, route, error, log, screen, branch or reproduction step. The skill reads architecture notes, ADRs, glossaries and test docs, inspects code and runs safe tools or tests.

Then comes the evidence loop. First a small set of candidate causes, each with a distinguishing prediction and a note on where those predictions diverge. Next, evidence that separates them: existing tests, traces and logs first, and temporary structured probes at the relevant boundaries when those cannot tell the leading causes apart. Before reproducing, the skill defines the probe contract — trigger, visible symptom, the questions the run answers, the fields and correlation IDs that test each prediction. Reproduction uses the fastest deterministic signal that matches the symptom: a focused test, script, browser test, trace replay, repeat loop, profiler or app automation.

An explicit diagnose call is already approval for behaviour-neutral temporary instrumentation inside the requested scope. The skill asks only when the next action lacks that authorization or needs access it does not have. Output leads with one status: Proven, Supported or Incomplete, plus the validation signal. Confidence scores are judgments, not measured probabilities. Diagnostic logs stay until you ask for cleanup.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add LegendApp/legend-skills --skill diagnose -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/diagnose/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/diagnose/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add LegendApp/legend-skills --skill diagnose -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/diagnose/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add LegendApp/legend-skills --skill diagnose -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/diagnose/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install LegendApp/legend-skills diagnose
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/diagnose/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add LegendApp/legend-skills --skill diagnose -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/LegendApp/legend-skills --path diagnose
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/diagnose/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add LegendApp/legend-skills --skill diagnose -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- trace a crash back to its cause from a log
- tell two similar hypotheses apart with one probe
- reproduce a flaky failure with enough repetitions
- separate a root cause from contributing ones
- gather evidence before touching the code

## Example prompts
- diagnose: checkout step fails, here is the log and branch
- diagnose-fix-loop: this test fails intermittently, find the cause and propose a fix
- diagnose: profile screen is empty after login, repro steps below

# Diagnose

Use this workflow after an explicit diagnose or diagnose-fix-loop invocation. Ordinary bug reports and fix requests do not opt in.

Find and explain the cause of the requested symptom using discriminating evidence. Pursue stronger proof while a practical probe can change the conclusion; do not require a numeric confidence threshold before a credible, scoped fix.

Start from the user's concrete anchor: file, route, error, log, screen, branch, artifact, or reproduction step. Consult relevant architecture notes, ADRs, glossaries, and test docs. Inspect code, run safe tools or tests, and analyze existing artifacts.

Explicit invocation of Diagnose constitutes approval for behavior-neutral temporary instrumentation within the requested scope. Reuse authorization already present in the conversation or the diagnose-fix-loop invocation for scoped fixes. Ask only when a next action lacks that authorization or requires unavailable access or a material unresolved decision.

## Evidence Loop

1. **Locate likely causes.** Inspect the code path and existing evidence around the user's anchor. Form the smallest useful set of likely areas and falsifiable candidate causes, including independent or contributing causes when applicable. Give each cause a distinguishing prediction and identify where those predictions diverge.

2. **Choose discriminating evidence.** Use existing tests, traces, and logs first. When they cannot distinguish the leading causes, load [instrumentation.md](references/instrumentation.md) and add temporary structured probes at the relevant boundaries. Instrument competing causes together when one reproduction can distinguish them.

   Before reproducing, define the probe contract:

   - the exact trigger and visible symptom
   - the questions this run will answer
