# legend-state-best-practices

A skill that sets the rules for @legendapp/state: observable ownership, subscriptions, effects and persistence. Useful when you build or audit reactive code.

## What it does

This is policy, not an API reference. Before touching code the agent checks the installed `@legendapp/state` version, imports, nearby store helpers, persistence setup and tests. When docs and code disagree, the installed version's source and types win.

Then the skill picks a mode. Build decides observable ownership, render subscriptions, effect and sync boundaries up front. Audit walks ownership, subscription breadth, non-reactive reads, React-to-observable mirrors and hot paths, and ranks findings by impact and confidence. Fix works inside the scope the conversation already authorized and asks only about an unresolved product decision or a materially larger task.

Some rules are concrete. In v3 you subscribe with `useValue`, while `use$` and `useSelector` stay deprecated aliases, so touched code gets migrated. `peek()` never tracks and fits commands, handlers and async work. A list row should subscribe to its own id via `useValue(() => selectedId$.get() === id)` instead of the whole `selectedId$`. Persistence and sync changes are covered in a separate `references/persistence-and-sync.md` file, so read it before editing those paths.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add LegendApp/legend-skills --skill legend-state-best-practices -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/legend-state-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/legend-state-best-practices/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add LegendApp/legend-skills --skill legend-state-best-practices -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/legend-state-best-practices/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add LegendApp/legend-skills --skill legend-state-best-practices -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/legend-state-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install LegendApp/legend-skills legend-state-best-practices
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/legend-state-best-practices/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add LegendApp/legend-skills --skill legend-state-best-practices -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/LegendApp/legend-skills --path legend-state-best-practices
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/legend-state-best-practices/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add LegendApp/legend-skills --skill legend-state-best-practices -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- pick an observable ownership boundary before writing code
- find an overly broad subscription in a component and narrow it
- drop a mirror between React state and observable state
- migrate touched code from `use$` and `useSelector` to `useValue`
- separate values that render from values read by commands and callbacks

## Example prompts
- Audit my @legendapp/state store: where is observable ownership too broad and which subscriptions are unnecessary?
- Rewrite this component so each list row subscribes only to its own id
- Set up store persistence following the skill rules and show me what changed

# Legend State Best Practices

Use Legend State to put reactive ownership at the smallest useful boundary.

## Verify The Surface

Before changing code:

- Check the installed `@legendapp/state` version, imports, nearby store helpers, persistence setup, and tests.
- Consult the current docs for exact signatures and version-specific migration guidance:
  - https://legendapp.com/open-source/state/v3/intro/introduction/
  - https://legendapp.com/open-source/state/v3/llms.txt
- Search for existing store factories, typed field hooks, reactive components, and naming conventions before adding a new abstraction.
- Identify values that must update rendered UI separately from values read only by commands, callbacks, native bridges, or async work.

This skill is policy, not an API reference. Prefer the installed version's source and types when docs and code differ.

## Choose The Mode

- **Build:** choose observable ownership, render subscriptions, effects, persistence or sync boundaries, and validation before writing code.
- **Audit:** inspect ownership, subscription breadth, non-reactive reads, React-to-observable mirrors, effects, persistence, and hot paths; report only concrete findings, ranked by impact and confidence.
- **Fix:** inspect the relevant ownership and subscription path, then implement and verify within the scope already authorized by the conversation. Ask only for an unresolved product decision, materially larger scope, or an unauthorized external action.

For audits, trace each finding from the mutation source through the tracked read to the component or effect that updates. Do not label an observable read broad or expensive without identifying the subscribers it wakes and the rendered value they consume.

## Ownership

- Use observables for shared UI, session, settings, document, selection, and command state with many narrow consumers.
- Use `useObservable` for component-lifetime state when nested UI needs field-level reactivity or handlers need a stable observable handle.
