## What it does

The skill lays out architectural patterns for replacing the Leanback UI Toolkit, Android Views and Support Fragments with `androidx.tv`. It sets library rules: TV Material 3 instead of mobile `androidx.compose.material3`, explicit class imports rather than wildcards, screen files named after the screen (`BrowseScreen.kt`, `PlaybackScreen.kt`), padding for overscan, and `Modifier.widthIn(max = 600.dp)` to keep long text readable.

D-pad handling gets its own section. Components from `androidx.tv.material3` do not take focus on their own, so initial focus goes through `FocusRequester` and `LaunchedEffect`. Focus traps are covered too: directional overrides on items inside `LazyColumn` or `LazyRow` break once an item scrolls off-screen, and the focus search throws `IllegalStateException`.

Playback screens need `androidx.media3:media3-ui-compose` and `PlayerSurface`. Wrapping View components in `AndroidView` is off the table. For `AsyncImage` without an explicit `ImageLoader`, add `io.coil-kt:coil-compose` to your Gradle dependencies. This is a set of conventions, not an automatic converter — you still rewrite the code, the skill just draws the lines.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add android/skills --skill leanback-to-compose-tv-migration -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/leanback-to-compose-tv-migration/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/leanback-to-compose-tv-migration/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add android/skills --skill leanback-to-compose-tv-migration -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/leanback-to-compose-tv-migration/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add android/skills --skill leanback-to-compose-tv-migration -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/leanback-to-compose-tv-migration/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install android/skills leanback-to-compose-tv-migration
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/leanback-to-compose-tv-migration/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add android/skills --skill leanback-to-compose-tv-migration -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/android/skills --path tv/leanback-to-compose-tv-migration
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/leanback-to-compose-tv-migration/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add android/skills --skill leanback-to-compose-tv-migration -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/android/skills/tree/HEAD/tv/leanback-to-compose-tv-migration/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- rewrite a browse screen away from `BrowseSupportFragment`
- replace `ArrayObjectAdapter` and `Presenter` with Compose lists
- fix a D-pad focus trap between rows
- build a playback screen on Media3 and `PlayerSurface`
- port settings off `LeanbackSettingsFragment` to TV Material 3

## Example prompts
- Rewrite `BrowseScreen` from Leanback to Compose for TV, focus on the first card
- Set initial focus on the screen with `FocusRequester` and `LaunchedEffect`
- Swap `VideoSupportFragment` for `PlayerSurface` from `media3-ui-compose`

## The 10-foot UI

A "10-foot UI" is a design paradigm for televisions that tailors an interface
for viewing from approximately 3 meters (10 feet) away. When designing for this
experience, account for these key characteristics:

- **Viewing distance**: Viewers are sitting far from the screen, "leaning back". Screen layouts are uncluttered, with text and UI elements that are large enough to be comfortably readable from a distance, without dense blocks of text.
- **Color contrast**: To avoid washed out colors on TV displays with low contrast ratios, the design uses high-contrast palettes and distinct visual indicators so focused states remain visible across different TV panels.
- **D-pad navigation** : Interaction relies on a directional remote control with limited 4-way navigation (`Up`, `Down`, `Left`, `Right`) with components organized into clear spatial grids and carousels without focus traps.
