# layer-video-timeline

Turns clips, images and audio you already have into a finished video: sequencing, transitions, text overlays, logo, music. Built for editing approved shots, not generating them.

## What it does

The skill drives three Layer tools: `render_video_timeline` produces the final file, `estimate_video_timeline_price` prices a render before you commit, and `get_generation_run` polls it. This is an assembly step. It composites assets that already exist in the workspace, while the shots themselves come from the sibling `layer-video` skill and should be approved before they reach a timeline.

Every clip, image and audio file needs a `file_id`. Generated assets carry one and feed the timeline directly; local files upload first. Settle two things before the first render, since both are expensive to fix later. Pick one aspect ratio and one resolution for the whole piece, or clips will letterbox or crop. Then check audio duration against picture duration: a short track ends in silence, a long one plays over the end card.

The skill advises against holding every shot for the same length, because equal intervals read as a slideshow. A straight cut is right most of the time, a dissolve suits a change of time or place, and mixing wipes, dissolves and fades in one piece looks unfinished. Small text over busy generated motion is hard to read, so put captions on a held frame or a plain plate. If a sibling skill referenced by the instructions is missing, it asks you to install it with `npx skills add layerai/skills --skill <name>`; unattended, it works from tool schemas and flags the gap.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add layerai/skills --skill layer-video-timeline -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/layer-video-timeline/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/layer-video-timeline/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add layerai/skills --skill layer-video-timeline -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/layer-video-timeline/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add layerai/skills --skill layer-video-timeline -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/layer-video-timeline/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install layerai/skills layer-video-timeline
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/layer-video-timeline/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add layerai/skills --skill layer-video-timeline -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/layerai/skills --path skills/layer-video-timeline
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/layer-video-timeline/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add layerai/skills --skill layer-video-timeline -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/layerai/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/layer-video-timeline/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- stitch several approved shots into a single deliverable
- add transitions between clips
- overlay a logo and titles on the footage
- layer music or voice-over under the cut
- cut a trailer or promo from existing shots

## Example prompts
- Cut these five approved shots into a 20-second vertical ad with our logo and a CTA
- Estimate the timeline render price first, then assemble it
- Check that every clip is 9:16 and lay the music under the whole piece

# Layer Video Timeline

## Overview

`render_video_timeline` edits assets the user already has into one finished video: clips in
sequence, transitions between them, text and logo overlays, and layered audio.
`estimate_video_timeline_price` prices a render without rendering, and `get_generation_run` polls it.

These three are named directly rather than discovered because they are first-party Layer tools
rather than models, with no competing alternative in the catalogue.

This is an assembly step, not a generation step. It composites assets that already exist. Generating
the clips is `layer-video`, and the shots should be approved before any of them reach a timeline.

If a sibling skill named here is missing from your available skills, ask the user to install it
(`npx skills add layerai/skills --skill <name>`); unattended, proceed from tool schemas and flag the
gap.

## Check for a single-generation answer first

Before assembling, ask whether one video model could render the whole piece. A model that produces a
multi-shot sequence in one generation holds its own continuity across the cuts, which assembly cannot
do. Assembly is right when the shots must be individually approved, when they come from different
sources, or when the piece is longer than any model will render.

## Get the inputs right before rendering

Every clip, image, and audio file must already be in the workspace and referenced by `file_id`.
Generated assets carry one, so they feed the timeline directly. Local files upload first.

Two things to settle before the first render, because both are expensive to fix afterwards:

- **One aspect ratio and one resolution for the whole piece.** Clips generated at mixed ratios either
