## What it does

The skill teaches the agent to pick the right `filter.use_case` for the job. Change one region and leave the rest alone — `inpainting` with `init_image` and a mask. Rewrite the whole image by instruction — `image_editing`. Extend the frame or fit another aspect ratio — `reframing`. Show the same subject from another view — `multi_angle` with the `camera` parameter. Splitting into layers, cutting out a background and upscaling are separate paths.

The core rule: every edit pass is a fresh generation that re-renders the whole image. Colours drift, a face loses its likeness, a logo degenerates. So when an edit comes out wrong, the skill says go back to the original and write a better instruction instead of correcting the correction. The exception is genuinely independent regions: masking the left lamp and then the right one touches disjoint pixels and stacks cleanly.

Upscaling runs through `filter.use_case: "upscaling"`, never a generation model — re-rendering at a larger size produces a new image that merely resembles the approved one. Angle changes need a model whose capabilities report `camera_transform`. The skill leans on the sibling `layer` skill; if it is missing, it asks you to install it with `npx skills add layerai/skills --skill <name>`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add layerai/skills --skill layer-image-editing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/layer-image-editing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/layer-image-editing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add layerai/skills --skill layer-image-editing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/layer-image-editing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add layerai/skills --skill layer-image-editing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/layer-image-editing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install layerai/skills layer-image-editing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/layer-image-editing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add layerai/skills --skill layer-image-editing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/layerai/skills --path skills/layer-image-editing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/layer-image-editing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add layerai/skills --skill layer-image-editing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/layerai/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/layer-image-editing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- change one region of an image and keep the rest exact
- extend a frame past its current bounds
- fit an image to another aspect ratio
- re-render a character from a different angle
- cut out a background or split art into layers

## Example prompts
- extend this portrait to 9:16, keep the character and lighting untouched
- remove the background from this image
- show this character from behind

# Layer Image Editing

## Overview

Editing is not generation with an image attached. Each intent maps to its own `use_case`, and picking
the wrong one is the usual reason an edit changes things it should not have touched.

| The user wants                         | `filter.use_case`    | Attach                            |
| -------------------------------------- | -------------------- | --------------------------------- |
| Change one region, keep the rest exact | `inpainting`         | `init_image` plus a `mask`        |
| Change the whole image by instruction  | `image_editing`      | `init_image`                      |
| Extend past the current frame          | `reframing`          | `init_image`                      |
| Fit another aspect ratio               | `reframing`          | `init_image`                      |
| The same subject from another angle    | `multi_angle`        | `init_image` or `reference_image` |
| Separate, editable layers              | `split_into_layers`  | `init_image`                      |
| Cut the subject out                    | `background_removal` | `init_image`                      |
| More pixels, same picture              | `upscaling`          | `init_image`                      |
| Clean line art into finished art       | `image_editing`      | `lineart` or `scribble`           |
| A crisp SVG from a raster              | `vectorization`      | `init_image`                      |

The loop and the spend gate are in the `layer` skill. If a sibling skill named here is missing from
your available skills, ask the user to install it (`npx skills add layerai/skills --skill <name>`);
unattended, proceed from tool schemas and flag the gap.

## Edit from the source, not from the last edit

Every edit pass is a fresh generation that re-renders the whole image, so each one drifts a little:
colours shift, a face loses its likeness, a logo degenerates. Three passes stacked on each other look
visibly worse than one pass that does all three things.
