Walks you from picking a metric kind to creating it in LaunchDarkly: events get instrumented first, then the metric is created and verified.

## What it does

The skill sets up a LaunchDarkly metric for an experiment or rollout. It starts by picking the kind: `custom` when your code calls `ldClient.track(eventKey)`, `pageview` for automatic hits on a matching URL, `click` for clicks on a CSS selector. The last two need no code changes, so the skill suggests them over `custom` whenever the task allows.

Custom metrics run in a different order: events have to flow before the metric exists. The skill calls `list-metric-events` to see which keys are already active. If yours is missing, it doesn't just warn you — it goes into the codebase, finds the handler, proposes a kebab-case key like `checkout-completed`, pulls the `clientSideId` with `get-environment` and writes it into `.env`. Then it checks for duplicates via `list-metrics`, proposes a metric config and waits for explicit confirmation.

You need a configured remote LaunchDarkly MCP server with `create-metric`, `get-metric` and `get-environment`; `list-metrics` and `list-metric-events` make the workflow richer. One trap worth knowing: "project" means two different things here. Your local repo and the LaunchDarkly project are unrelated, and a folder name is not a `projectKey`. Mix them up and the metric lands in the wrong place, so confirm the key up front.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add launchdarkly/ai-tooling --skill launchdarkly-metric-create -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/launchdarkly-metric-create/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/launchdarkly-metric-create/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add launchdarkly/ai-tooling --skill launchdarkly-metric-create -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/launchdarkly-metric-create/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add launchdarkly/ai-tooling --skill launchdarkly-metric-create -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/launchdarkly-metric-create/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install launchdarkly/ai-tooling launchdarkly-metric-create
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/launchdarkly-metric-create/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add launchdarkly/ai-tooling --skill launchdarkly-metric-create -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/launchdarkly/ai-tooling --path skills/metrics/launchdarkly-metric-create
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/launchdarkly-metric-create/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add launchdarkly/ai-tooling --skill launchdarkly-metric-create -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/launchdarkly/ai-tooling/tree/HEAD/skills/metrics/launchdarkly-metric-create/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create a conversion metric for an A/B experiment
- track button clicks without touching the code
- add a `track()` call to a form handler
- check whether a metric with the same event key already exists
- wire the app to the right LaunchDarkly environment through `.env`

## Example prompts
- Create a pageview metric for /checkout in the my-app project
- I want to count clicks on .checkout-btn — set up a click metric
- Create a custom metric checkout-completed and add track() to the handler

# LaunchDarkly Metric Create

You're using a skill that will guide you through creating a LaunchDarkly metric. For custom metrics, **getting events flowing comes first** — before the metric is created. Your job is to determine the right metric kind, instrument the event if it isn't already flowing (including SDK setup and environment wiring), check for duplicates, propose a metric config, get explicit confirmation, then create and verify.

## Prerequisites

This skill requires the remotely hosted LaunchDarkly MCP server to be configured in your environment.

**Required MCP tools:**
- `create-metric` — create the metric
- `get-metric` — verify it after creation
- `get-environment` — fetch the client-side SDK key when instrumenting

**Optional MCP tools (enhance workflow):**
- `list-metrics` — check for existing metrics with the same event key and understand naming conventions
- `list-metric-events` — discover which event keys have recent activity before committing to one (custom metrics only)

## Two Different "Projects" — Never Confuse Them

Users work with two completely separate things that both get called "project." You must keep these distinct at all times:

| | What it is | How the user refers to it | What you do with it |
|---|---|---|---|
| **LaunchDarkly project** | The project inside the user's LD account where the metric will be created | Usually sounds like an environment or team name: `my-app`, `anthony-agent-dev-5000`, `production` | Pass as `projectKey` to all MCP tool calls |
```
