## What it does

The skill walks the agent through a short interview first: is this an experiment, a guarded rollout with automatic regression detection, or a project-wide release policy? Then it asks what the change is and, where relevant, the flag key. For rollouts and policies it calls `list-release-policies` and prints the metrics that will attach on their own, so the recommendation builds on top of existing config instead of duplicating it.

Next it inventories the project with `list-metrics` and cross-checks each metric against `list-metric-events`. Metrics whose event keys show recent activity go in the healthy group; the rest get flagged as at-risk. For an experiment, it asks you to finish the sentence about what should increase or decrease, then proposes one primary metric plus one of each secondary type: guardrail, counter-metric, supporting signal.

Guarded rollouts get stricter treatment. Every metric there is a possible automatic rollback trigger, so the skill leans toward two or three reliability metrics with stable baselines and warns that an at-risk metric can fire a false rollback from data quality problems rather than a real regression. Release policies are held to two or three metrics with a long event history. The skill is advisory only — it does not create metrics or attach them to anything. It needs the remotely hosted LaunchDarkly MCP server configured; `list-release-policies` is optional.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add launchdarkly/ai-tooling --skill launchdarkly-metric-choose -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/launchdarkly-metric-choose/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/launchdarkly-metric-choose/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add launchdarkly/ai-tooling --skill launchdarkly-metric-choose -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/launchdarkly-metric-choose/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add launchdarkly/ai-tooling --skill launchdarkly-metric-choose -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/launchdarkly-metric-choose/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install launchdarkly/ai-tooling launchdarkly-metric-choose
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/launchdarkly-metric-choose/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add launchdarkly/ai-tooling --skill launchdarkly-metric-choose -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/launchdarkly/ai-tooling --path skills/metrics/launchdarkly-metric-choose
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/launchdarkly-metric-choose/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add launchdarkly/ai-tooling --skill launchdarkly-metric-choose -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/launchdarkly/ai-tooling/tree/HEAD/skills/metrics/launchdarkly-metric-choose/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick a primary metric that matches the experiment hypothesis
- choose guardrail metrics that catch a regression during rollout
- see which metrics auto-attach from existing release policies
- filter out metrics with no recent event activity before a rollout
- assemble a small metric set for a project-wide release policy

## Example prompts
- Help me choose metrics for an experiment on the new recommendation algorithm
- Which guardrail metrics should I add to the guarded rollout of the checkout-flow flag?
- Show what auto-attaches from our release policies and suggest metrics for a new one

# LaunchDarkly Metric Choose

You're using a skill that helps users select the right metrics before setting up an experiment, guarded rollout, or release policy. Your job is to understand the feature context, surface what will auto-attach from existing project policies, inventory what's available and healthy, and produce a clear typed recommendation.

This skill is advisory. It does not create metrics, attach them to experiments, or configure rollouts. For those tasks, see the related skills at the end of this document.

## Prerequisites

This skill requires the remotely hosted LaunchDarkly MCP server to be configured in your environment.

**Required MCP tools:**
- `list-metrics` — inventory available metrics with their types and event keys
- `list-metric-events` — check which event keys have recent activity

**Optional MCP tools (enhance workflow):**
- `list-release-policies` — fetch project-level policies that configure which metrics auto-attach to guarded rollouts. Use this for the guarded rollout and release policy paths.

## Workflow

### Step 1: Identify the Context

Ask two questions upfront:

1. **What is this for?**
   - **(a) Experiment** — testing a hypothesis with a flag variant
   - **(b) Guarded rollout** — progressively rolling out a change with automatic regression detection
```
