## What it does

The skill equips coding agents with 24 rules for Laravel 13 test suites running on PHP 8.3+. Before generating test code, it inspects `composer.json` and checks for `tests/Pest.php`. If `pestphp/pest` is installed, it writes tests using Pest syntax; otherwise, it defaults to standard PHPUnit 12 test classes. When both packages are present, Pest takes priority.

It provides structured patterns for HTTP endpoint testing, typed model factories, and authentication via Sanctum tokens. Testing facade fakes covers storage, events, queues, mail, and Laravel 13 AI components such as `Agent::fake()` and `Embeddings::fake()`. When the environment cannot be detected automatically, the agent asks which test framework to use.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AsyrafHussin/agent-skills --skill laravel-testing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/laravel-testing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/laravel-testing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AsyrafHussin/agent-skills --skill laravel-testing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/laravel-testing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AsyrafHussin/agent-skills --skill laravel-testing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/laravel-testing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AsyrafHussin/agent-skills laravel-testing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/laravel-testing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AsyrafHussin/agent-skills --skill laravel-testing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AsyrafHussin/agent-skills --path skills/laravel-testing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/laravel-testing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AsyrafHussin/agent-skills --skill laravel-testing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/AsyrafHussin/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/laravel-testing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write HTTP feature tests verifying JSON structure and response status codes
- generate model factories using states, sequences, and relationships
- verify database entries and soft deletion states
- fake mail, queue jobs, notifications, and AI agent calls
- test authenticated endpoints using session guards or Sanctum tokens

## Example prompts
- Write a feature test for the `/api/posts` endpoint with Sanctum authentication
- Generate a factory for the `Invoice` model with paid and canceled states
- Test dispatching events and background queue jobs on user signup

# Laravel 13 Testing — Pest PHP 4 & PHPUnit 12

> **Supports both Pest PHP 4 and PHPUnit 12.** See Framework Detection below.
>
> **PHPUnit version note:** Laravel 13 ships with `phpunit/phpunit: ^12.5.12` in its default `composer.json`. All patterns in this skill are compatible with PHPUnit 11, 12, and 13.

Comprehensive testing guide for Laravel 13 applications. Contains 24 rules across 6 categories for writing fast, readable, and reliable tests. Supports both **Pest PHP 4** and **PHPUnit 12** (Laravel 13 default).

## Framework Detection

**Before writing or reviewing any test code, detect which testing framework the project uses:**

### Step 1 — Check composer.json

```bash
# Look for these in require-dev:
# "pestphp/pest" → Pest
# "phpunit/phpunit" (without pest) → PHPUnit
```

- If `pestphp/pest` is present → **use Pest syntax**
- If only `phpunit/phpunit` is present → **use PHPUnit syntax**
- If both are present → **Pest takes priority** (Pest runs on top of PHPUnit)

### Step 2 — Check for tests/Pest.php

- If `tests/Pest.php` exists → **Pest is configured**, use Pest syntax

### Step 3 — If still unclear, ask the user

> "I couldn't detect the testing framework. Does this project use **Pest PHP** or **PHPUnit**?"

---

## Syntax Reference

### Test Declaration

| | Pest | PHPUnit |
|--|------|---------|
| Test function | `test('...', fn() => ...)` | `public function test_...(): void` |
| Readable name | `it('...', fn() => ...)` | `#[Test] public function it_...()` |
| Grouping | `describe('...', fn() => ...)` | Test class name / nested classes |
| Trait application | `uses(RefreshDatabase::class)` | `use RefreshDatabase;` inside class |
| Before each | `beforeEach(fn() => ...)` | `protected function setUp(): void` |
| After each | `afterEach(fn() => ...)` | `protected function tearDown(): void` |
| Parameterised | `->with([...])` | `#[DataProvider]` attribute |
| Global setup | `uses(...)->in('Feature')` in `Pest.php` | Base `TestCase` class |

### Core assertions (identical in both frameworks)

`assertStatus`, `assertJson`, `assertJsonPath`, `assertDatabaseHas`, `assertModelExists`, `actingAs`, `Mail::fake()`, `Queue::fake()`, `Event::fake()`, `Notification::fake()`, `Storage::fake()` — all work the same in Pest and PHPUnit.
