## What it does

The skill ships 33 rules split into 9 categories: query performance and N+1, indexing strategies, Eloquent optimization, Redis caching, pagination and large datasets, transactions and locking, migrations, query debugging, naming conventions. Every rule lives in its own file under `rules/`, with a bad example and a good one.

Your agent pulls the skill in when you write query-builder code, chase an N+1, add indexes to a migration, or dig into a slow query with EXPLAIN. Ready-made snippets cover `Model::preventLazyLoading()`, `Cache::remember` with a TTL, `cursorPaginate`, `withCount`, `chunkById`, and short `DB::transaction` blocks.

It targets Laravel 13.x and PHP 8.3+. On older releases some snippets won't compile, since the API and syntax differ. Install runs through `npx skills add`; the `-a` flag picks your platform.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AsyrafHussin/agent-skills --skill laravel-database-optimization -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/laravel-database-optimization/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/laravel-database-optimization/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AsyrafHussin/agent-skills --skill laravel-database-optimization -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/laravel-database-optimization/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AsyrafHussin/agent-skills --skill laravel-database-optimization -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/laravel-database-optimization/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AsyrafHussin/agent-skills laravel-database-optimization
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/laravel-database-optimization/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AsyrafHussin/agent-skills --skill laravel-database-optimization -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AsyrafHussin/agent-skills --path skills/laravel-database-optimization
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/laravel-database-optimization/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AsyrafHussin/agent-skills --skill laravel-database-optimization -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- kill N+1 in a listing with relations
- add a composite index for a frequent filter
- cache an expensive query in Redis
- switch a big table to cursor pagination
- ship a migration without locking the table

## Example prompts
- Remove the N+1 from the posts-with-comments query and show the eager loading version
- Add a composite index to the migration for the `status` and `created_at` filter
- Cache the top 10 posts by comment count with `Cache::remember` for an hour

# Laravel Database Optimization

Comprehensive database optimization guide for Laravel 13 applications. Contains 33 rules across 9 categories for writing performant database queries, proper indexing, efficient caching, naming conventions, and debugging slow queries in Laravel 13.

## Metadata

- **Version:** 1.1.0
- **Framework:** Laravel 13.x
- **PHP:** 8.3+

## When to Apply

Reference these guidelines when:
- Writing Eloquent queries or using the query builder
- Diagnosing and fixing N+1 query problems
- Adding database indexes to migrations
- Implementing Redis or cache-based optimizations
- Paginating or processing large datasets
- Wrapping operations in database transactions
- Creating or modifying migrations for production databases
- Debugging slow queries with EXPLAIN or Laravel Debugbar

## Rule Categories by Priority

| Priority | Category | Impact | Prefix |
|----------|----------|--------|--------|
| 1 | Query Performance & N+1 | CRITICAL | `query-` |
| 2 | Indexing Strategies | CRITICAL | `index-` |
| 3 | Eloquent Optimization | HIGH | `eloquent-` |
| 4 | Caching with Redis | HIGH | `cache-` |
| 5 | Pagination & Large Datasets | HIGH | `data-` |
| 6 | Transactions & Locking | HIGH | `lock-` |
| 7 | Migrations | HIGH | `migrate-` |
| 8 | Query Debugging | MEDIUM | `debug-` |
| 9 | Naming & Structure | HIGH | `naming-` |

## Quick Reference

### 1. Query Performance & N+1 (CRITICAL)

- `query-eager-loading` - Use eager loading to eliminate N+1 queries
- `query-prevent-lazy-loading` - Prevent lazy loading in development
- `query-auto-eager-loading` - Configure automatic eager loading on models
- `query-select-columns` - Select only needed columns instead of SELECT *

### 2. Indexing Strategies (CRITICAL)

- `index-foreign-keys` - Index all foreign key columns
- `index-composite-indexes` - Create composite indexes for multi-column queries
- `index-covering-indexes` - Use covering indexes for read-heavy queries
- `index-full-text` - Use full-text indexes for search functionality

### 3. Eloquent Optimization (HIGH)

- `eloquent-query-builder-hot-paths` - Use query builder for performance-critical paths
- `eloquent-with-count-aggregates` - Use withCount instead of loading relations to count
