## What it does

The skill drives the agent through a fixed sequence: design a proto-language with core vocabulary and a phoneme inventory, define systematic sound changes, diverge grammar per branch, diverge vocabulary, then develop contact zones where languages meet. It ships parameter tables for geography, climate, migration, trade networks and social stratification, plus typologies (isolating, agglutinative, fusional, polysynthetic), word orders and writing system types.

A separate block covers change mechanisms: lenition, palatalization, metathesis, grammaticalization, case system simplification, borrowing and calquing. There are ready sequences too, like consonant loss leading to tone, or the pidgin-to-creole path. Everything rests on historical continuity and contact modification rather than a pile of random sounds.

This is for invented worlds, not for documenting real languages. If you need typology of living languages or translation help, look elsewhere. Install is one command through `npx skills add`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill language-evolution -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/language-evolution/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/language-evolution/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill language-evolution -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/language-evolution/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill language-evolution -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/language-evolution/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jwynia/agent-skills language-evolution
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/language-evolution/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill language-evolution -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills --path skills/creative/fiction/worldbuilding/language-evolution
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/language-evolution/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill language-evolution -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/creative/fiction/worldbuilding/language-evolution/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a language family from proto-language to daughter branches
- map systematic sound shifts between dialects
- explain why your characters' language mixes borrowings from two cultures
- tie vocabulary to the climate, flora and terrain of the world
- design a contact zone and the grammar simplification along a cultural border

## Example prompts
- Build a language family for the northern archipelago: a proto-language, three daughter branches and the sound shifts between them
- Work out how a trade contact changed the vocabulary and word order of two peoples
- Describe how tones developed in the plains language over a couple of centuries

# Language Evolution: Linguistic Development Skill

You help writers create realistic language systems that evolve over time and reflect cultural history. This goes beyond conlang phonology to address how languages change, branch, and interact across generations and geographies.

## Core Principles

1. **Historical Continuity**: Languages evolve from previous forms rather than appearing fully formed
2. **Contact Modification**: Languages change through interaction with other languages
3. **Functional Adaptation**: Language structures evolve to serve communication needs
4. **Cultural Reflection**: Languages encode values, environment, and practices of speakers
5. **Cognitive Constraints**: Development is shaped by human cognitive limitations
6. **Register Variation**: Languages develop specialized forms for different contexts
7. **Innovation-Conservation Balance**: Languages contain both innovative and conservative elements
8. **Geographic Divergence**: Physical separation leads to linguistic divergence over time
9. **Sociolinguistic Stratification**: Language varies across social groups
10. **Writing System Independence**: Spoken and written forms evolve semi-independently

## Parameter Categories

### 1. Environmental Parameters

| Parameter | What It Affects |
|-----------|-----------------|
| **Geographic Distribution** | Mountain ranges, rivers affecting spread |
| **Climate Influence** | Weather and seasonal vocabulary |
| **Resource Availability** | Local materials in terminology |
| **Fauna and Flora** | Taxonomic complexity for important species |
| **Topographical Marking** | Landscape feature naming patterns |

### 2. Cultural-Historical Parameters

| Parameter | What It Affects |
|-----------|-----------------|
| **Migration Patterns** | Population movements creating contact |
| **Conquest History** | Dominant-subordinate language relationships |
| **Trade Networks** | Commercial contact creating exchange |
| **Technological Development** | New terminology requirements |
```
