## What it does

The skill ships configuration patterns for LangChain4J `EmbeddingStore` beans. You get examples for PostgreSQL/pgvector, Pinecone, MongoDB Atlas, Milvus and Neo4j: host, port, database, table, dimension, table and index creation. Running several stores side by side is covered too, with `@Qualifier` on each bean.

There is a validation order to follow: build the store, test the connection, confirm the embedding model dimension matches the store setting, ingest a small test batch, run a sample query. The author advises starting full ingestion only after those steps pass. For production the skill shows a HikariCP connection pool and a health indicator that fires an empty search and checks whether the store answers.

Dimensions in the examples are 1536, matching OpenAI embeddings, and the model and the store have to agree on that number. Swap in a model with a different dimension and the sample config needs editing. `OpenAiChatModel` reads its key from the `OPENAI_API_KEY` environment variable. The skill allows Read, Write, Edit, Bash, Glob and Grep, so it can read and change files in your project.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL, MongoDB

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill langchain4j-vector-stores-configuration -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/langchain4j-vector-stores-configuration/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/langchain4j-vector-stores-configuration/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill langchain4j-vector-stores-configuration -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/langchain4j-vector-stores-configuration/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill langchain4j-vector-stores-configuration -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/langchain4j-vector-stores-configuration/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit langchain4j-vector-stores-configuration
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill langchain4j-vector-stores-configuration -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --path plugins/developer-kit-java/skills/langchain4j-vector-stores-configuration
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/langchain4j-vector-stores-configuration/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill langchain4j-vector-stores-configuration -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- build an `EmbeddingStore` bean for pgvector with the right dimension
- connect Pinecone or MongoDB Atlas to a RAG app
- keep separate stores for documents and chat history
- filter search results by metadata fields
- add a health check for the vector database

## Example prompts
- Set up a PgVectorEmbeddingStore for the embeddings table with dimension 1536
- Create two stores: documents in pgvector, chat history in MongoDB
- Add a health check that pings the vector store

# LangChain4J Vector Stores Configuration

Configure vector stores for Retrieval-Augmented Generation applications with LangChain4J.

## Overview

LangChain4J provides a unified abstraction for vector stores (PostgreSQL/pgvector, Pinecone, MongoDB Atlas, Milvus, Neo4j) with builder-based configuration, metadata filtering, and hybrid search support.

## When to Use

- Configuring vector stores for semantic search and RAG applications
- Setting up embedding storage with metadata filtering and hybrid search
- Optimizing vector database performance for production AI workloads

## Instructions

### Set Up Basic Vector Store

Configure an embedding store for vector operations:

```java
@Bean
public EmbeddingStore<TextSegment> embeddingStore() {
    return PgVectorEmbeddingStore.builder()
        .host("localhost")
        .port(5432)
        .database("vectordb")
        .user("username")
        .password("password")
        .table("embeddings")
        .dimension(1536) // OpenAI embedding dimension
        .createTable(true)
        .useIndex(true)
        .build();
}
```

### Validation Workflow

Follow this workflow to ensure correct vector store setup:

1. **Configure**: Build the embedding store with required dimensions and connection parameters
2. **Test connection**: Verify store connectivity with a health check before ingesting data
3. **Validate dimensions**: Confirm embedding model dimensions match store configuration
