# langchain-typescript-quickstart

Builds a minimal LangChain agent in TypeScript following the official quickstart: a weather tool, createAgent, its own folder. Handy when you want to try LangChain locally.

## What it does

The skill walks through LangChain's official quickstart and builds a small TypeScript agent in a fresh directory — a weather tool plus `createAgent`. It fetches the quickstart page through Docs MCP or plain HTTP and follows what is on the page, rather than inventing an API from memory.

First it asks which provider and model you want, then swaps in a `provider:model` string. With no answer it suggests `anthropic:claude-sonnet-5`. You need Node 22+ and the provider key in `.env`, which gets gitignored. Edit that file yourself instead of pasting a key into the chat.

Everything happens in the new folder, so the project you have open stays untouched. The only secret is the API key; LangSmith and Tavily stay out unless you ask for them. Then it runs the example, shows the output and stops, pointing at `langchain-fundamentals` for next steps. One catch: a repo pinned to an older Node will not run this.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add langchain-ai/langchain-skills --skill langchain-typescript-quickstart -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/langchain-typescript-quickstart/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/langchain-typescript-quickstart/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add langchain-ai/langchain-skills --skill langchain-typescript-quickstart -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/langchain-typescript-quickstart/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add langchain-ai/langchain-skills --skill langchain-typescript-quickstart -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/langchain-typescript-quickstart/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install langchain-ai/langchain-skills langchain-typescript-quickstart
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/langchain-typescript-quickstart/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add langchain-ai/langchain-skills --skill langchain-typescript-quickstart -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/langchain-ai/langchain-skills --path config/skills/langchain-typescript-quickstart
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/langchain-typescript-quickstart/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add langchain-ai/langchain-skills --skill langchain-typescript-quickstart -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- scaffold a local LangChain agent in TypeScript from scratch
- follow the live quickstart instead of guessing the API
- switch the example to another provider and model
- keep the provider key in a gitignored `.env`
- run the example and see real output before extending it

## Example prompts
- Scaffold a minimal LangChain agent in TypeScript in a new `langchain-agent/` folder, following the official quickstart
- Ask me which provider and model to use before you write any code
- Use `anthropic:claude-sonnet-5`, run the example and show me the output

# LangChain TypeScript quickstart

Follow the live docs — do not invent an alternate API from memory:

**https://docs.langchain.com/oss/javascript/langchain/quickstart**

Fetch that page (Docs MCP or HTTP) and implement what it shows (weather agent + `createAgent`). Requires Node 22+.

## Local setup constraints

Apply these on top of the quickstart (they keep setup minimal and model-agnostic):

1. **Ask** which provider/model to use. Showcase that LangChain is model-agnostic. Suggested prompt:

   > Which model should this agent use? Pass a `provider:model` string — e.g. `openai:gpt-5.5`, `anthropic:claude-sonnet-5`, `google-genai:gemini-2.5-flash-lite`. Default if you're unsure: **`anthropic:claude-sonnet-5`**.

   Swap the quickstart's model string for their choice (or the default).

2. Create a **new** directory (e.g. `langchain-agent/`) and do all work there — do not pollute the open project.

3. Only secret: the provider API key in `.env` (gitignored). No LangSmith / Tavily unless they ask. Prefer they edit `.env` themselves — don't paste keys into chat.

4. Install the provider package needed for their model if the quickstart's base install isn't enough.

5. Run the example, show output, then stop. Point to `langchain-fundamentals` for next steps.
