# kysely

A skill that gives the agent rules for writing Kysely code: schema typing, joins, transactions, type generation. Useful when your project is TypeScript and SQL.

## What it does

The skill covers how to write Kysely code — a type-safe SQL query builder for TypeScript. The agent gets guidance on declaring the database interface, telling `Generated<T>` apart from `ColumnType<SelectType, InsertType, UpdateType>`, and wiring connections for PostgreSQL, MySQL and SQLite.

Query examples are included: column selection and aliases, `innerJoin` and `leftJoin`, subqueries in `select` and `where`, inserts with `onConflict`, updates, deletes, and transactions through `db.transaction().execute`. A separate section covers `kysely-codegen`: types are generated from an existing database with `npx kysely-codegen`, and you rerun it after schema changes. Plugins such as CamelCase are mentioned too.

You need Kysely itself plus a driver for your database — `pg`, `mysql2` or `better-sqlite3`. The skill assumes the schema is already described in TypeScript: without a `Database` interface there is no autocompletion and no type checking, so the agent writes queries blind.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill kysely -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/kysely/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/kysely/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill kysely -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/kysely/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill kysely -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/kysely/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Mindrally/skills kysely
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/kysely/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill kysely -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Mindrally/skills --path kysely
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/kysely/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill kysely -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Mindrally/skills/tree/HEAD/kysely/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- declare a database interface with table and column types
- write a typed select with conditions and aliases
- build a query with innerJoin or leftJoin across tables
- run an upsert through onConflict
- generate types from an existing database with kysely-codegen

## Example prompts
- describe the database schema for Kysely and a PostgreSQL connection
- rewrite this query in Kysely with a typed result
- generate types from the database with kysely-codegen

# Kysely Development Guidelines

You are an expert in Kysely, TypeScript, and SQL database design with a focus on type safety and query optimization.

## Core Principles

- Kysely is a thin abstraction layer over SQL, designed by SQL lovers for SQL lovers
- Full type safety with autocompletion for tables, columns, and query results
- Predictable 1:1 compilation to SQL - what you write is what you get
- No magic or hidden behavior - explicit and transparent query building
- Works with Node.js, Deno, Bun, Cloudflare Workers, and browsers

## Database Interface Definition

### Define Your Database Schema

```typescript
import { Generated, ColumnType, Selectable, Insertable, Updateable } from "kysely";
// Define table interfaces
interface UserTable {
  id: Generated<number>;
  email: string;
  name: string | null;
  is_active: boolean;
  created_at: Generated<Date>;
  updated_at: ColumnType<Date, Date | undefined, Date>;
}
interface PostTable {
  id: Generated<number>;
  title: string;
  content: string | null;
  author_id: number;
  published_at: Date | null;
  created_at: Generated<Date>;
}
// Define the database interface
interface Database {
  users: UserTable;
  posts: PostTable;
}
// Export helper types for each table
export type User = Selectable<UserTable>;
export type NewUser = Insertable<UserTable>;
export type UserUpdate = Updateable<UserTable>;
export type Post = Selectable<PostTable>;
export type NewPost = Insertable<PostTable>;
export type PostUpdate = Updateable<PostTable>;
```

### Generated vs ColumnType

- `Generated<T>` - Columns auto-generated by the database (auto-increment, defaults)
- `ColumnType<SelectType, InsertType, UpdateType>` - Different types for different operations

## Database Connection

### PostgreSQL Setup

```typescript
import { Kysely, PostgresDialect } from "kysely";
import { Pool } from "pg";
const db = new Kysely<Database>({
  dialect: new PostgresDialect({
    pool: new Pool({
      connectionString: process.env.DATABASE_URL,
    }),
  }),
});
export { db };
```

### MySQL Setup

```typescript
import { Kysely, MysqlDialect } from "kysely";
import { createPool } from "mysql2";
const db = new Kysely<Database>({
  dialect: new MysqlDialect({
    pool: createPool({
      uri: process.env.DATABASE_URL,
    }),
  }),
});
```

### SQLite Setup

```typescript
import { Kysely, SqliteDialect } from "kysely";
import Database from "better-sqlite3";
const db = new Kysely<Database>({
  dialect: new SqliteDialect({
    database: new Database("database.db"),
  }),
});
```

## Query Patterns

### Select Queries

```typescript
// Select all columns from a table
const users = await db.selectFrom("users").selectAll().execute();
