# kranz-services

This skill lets an agent find Kranz runtimes over MCP, inspect services and logs, and run authorized actions. Use it before project commands such as builds, tests, or migrations.

## What it does

The skill looks for a Kranz runtime associated with the current directory and checks which MCP tools are available. The agent can use them to inspect service state, logs, ports, actions, operation plans, and dependency graphs. If MCP cannot be used, runtime discovery falls back to `kranz ps --output json`.

Before a build, test, or migration, the skill checks whether Kranz defines an action for that operation. When one exists, the agent uses it so the configured working directory and environment apply. Starting, stopping, and restarting services affect the live environment, so those changes require a direct user request. Lifecycle calls also need explicit service or tag selectors; some actions require a plan-bound confirmation token.

## Requirements
- Works with: Docker

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kranz-org/kranz --skill kranz-services -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/kranz-services/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/kranz-services/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kranz-org/kranz --skill kranz-services -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/kranz-services/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kranz-org/kranz --skill kranz-services -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/kranz-services/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install kranz-org/kranz kranz-services
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/kranz-services/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kranz-org/kranz --skill kranz-services -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/kranz-org/kranz --path skills/kranz-services
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/kranz-services/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kranz-org/kranz --skill kranz-services -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/kranz-org/kranz/tree/HEAD/skills/kranz-services/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find the Kranz runtime for the current directory
- inspect a service and read its logs
- identify the owner of a local port
- run a build or test through a Kranz action
- review the impact of a service restart

## Example prompts
- Find the Kranz runtime for this directory and show the service status.
- Read the recent logs for service `api` and check what owns port `3303`.
- Show the plan to stop `worker` and its dependents, but do not stop anything.

description: Use existing Kranz runtimes via MCP to inspect services, logs, ports, actions, and plans, or to start, stop, restart, and handle confirmation tokens. # Work with services through Kranz

Kranz is a local service orchestrator. A developer may already have the project
running before the task starts, and that runtime should remain intact after the
task finishes. Starting another `npm run dev`, worker, or Docker stack can create
a duplicate process with unrelated logs and ports.

Prefer Kranz MCP tools over shell commands when they are available. MCP is
already connected to the runtime API and does not require direct access to its
Unix socket.

## Discover the runtime first

Inspect the complete tool registry, including lazy or deferred tools, for tools
named like `mcp__kranz__runtimes`, `mcp__kranz__status`, and
`mcp__kranz__logs`.

If `mcp__kranz__runtimes` is available:

1. Call it.
2. Select the runtime whose `directory` is equal to, or a parent of, the current
   working directory.
3. Pass its `name` as `runtime` to every runtime-scoped MCP call.

If Kranz MCP is unavailable or its transport cannot start, run exactly one
fallback discovery command:

```bash
kranz ps --output json
```

Match the current directory against `.data[].directory`, including parent
directories. If there is no matching runtime, stop applying this skill and use
the project's ordinary workflow. Do not infer Kranz usage from a configuration
file: personal Kranz configuration may live above the repository or outside
version control.

When a runtime is found, tell the user briefly that subsequent service work
will use it.

## Read without disturbing processes

Use the matching MCP tool with `runtime: NAME`:

| Need | MCP tool |
| --- | --- |
| Service state | `status` |
| Bounded logs | `logs` |
| Declared and detected ports | `ports` |
| Owner of a local port | `port_inspect` |
| Available actions | `action_list` |
| Operation plan | `plan` |
| Dependency graph | `graph` |
| Preflight checks | `doctor` |

Use CLI only as a fallback or for a surface MCP does not expose:

```bash
KRANZ_PROJECT=NAME kranz status --output json
KRANZ_PROJECT=NAME kranz logs SERVICE --tail 200
KRANZ_PROJECT=NAME kranz ports --output json
KRANZ_PROJECT=NAME kranz services info SERVICE
KRANZ_PROJECT=NAME kranz actions --output json
kranz ports inspect 3303 --output json
KRANZ_PROJECT=NAME kranz clients --output json
```

`-p NAME` is equivalent to the one-shot `KRANZ_PROJECT=NAME` prefix and is
appropriate when explicit command text is easier to audit.

Treat `ready: null` and `alive: null` as “no probe configured”, never as a
successful health check. Logs remain available after a process exits, so read
them before considering a restart.

## Mutate only when requested

`start`, `stop`, `restart`, `up`, `down`, `reload`, and `action_run` change the
