## What it does

This JetBrains skill starts by pinning down four facts: where the build runs (local or CI), what it produces (a debug feedback loop or a release artifact), its state (first, clean, warm), and which tasks dominate the log. Then it maps the dominant symptom to a cause. Release linking inside a local loop, a Kotlin/Native toolchain re-downloaded on every CI run, or a broad task like `assembleXCFramework` where one simulator target would do — each points to a specific reference file with the fix.

A read-only script, `scripts/audit-native-build.sh`, prints `file:line` findings: disabled caches, broad local tasks, `transitiveExport`, oversized KSP configuration, a missing `.konan` cache in CI. Findings are leads, not verdicts, so each one gets checked against project policy. Fixes land one at a time with a re-measurement between them, ordered from safe to risky: Gradle and configuration caches plus a warm `~/.konan` first, then narrowing the task set, then export and generated-code cost, and experimental switches last with the user's agreement.

The skill holds one line throughout: a faster local loop must not change what CI publishes. Release tasks stay as they are, and comparisons run warm against warm, never warm against cold. No macOS host or Xcode? Then the analysis works from logs and build scans, and the skill says outright that the conclusion is static. The source text is truncated, so I won't guess at the rest of the reporting section.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-native-build-performance -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/kotlin-tooling-native-build-performance/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/kotlin-tooling-native-build-performance/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-native-build-performance -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/kotlin-tooling-native-build-performance/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-native-build-performance -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/kotlin-tooling-native-build-performance/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills kotlin-tooling-native-build-performance
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/kotlin-tooling-native-build-performance/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-native-build-performance -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --path skills/kotlin-tooling-native-build-performance
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/kotlin-tooling-native-build-performance/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-native-build-performance -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/kotlin-tooling-native-build-performance/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find out why a local iOS build takes minutes
- stop CI from re-downloading the Kotlin/Native toolchain
- cut the target matrix down to the one simulator build you need
- reduce `transitiveExport` and KSP cost on the native path
- compare warm builds and confirm the win with the same command

## Example prompts
- Why does `:shared:assembleXCFramework` take 12 minutes, and what can I fix safely?
- Our CI re-downloads Kotlin/Native every run — diagnose it
- Give me a build performance plan for local development and CI separately

# Kotlin/Native Build Performance

Turn "the iOS build is slow" into a measured diagnosis and a small set of safe
fixes. Two rules apply throughout:

1. Never trade away required release behavior. A faster local loop must not
   change what CI publishes.
2. Measure before and after with the same command and the same build state.
   An unmeasured fix is a guess.

## Step 0: Classify the Slow Scenario

Establish four facts before editing anything: **where** (local or CI),
**what** (debug feedback loop or release/distribution artifact), **state**
(first build, clean, warm, or no-op), and **phase** (which tasks dominate the
log). Then match the dominant symptom:

| Symptom in the build log | Likely cause | Read |
|---|---|---|
| `linkRelease*` or `*ReleaseXCFramework` tasks in a local development loop | Building distribution artifacts for development | [artifacts-and-targets](references/artifacts-and-targets.md) |
| Kotlin/Native compiler distribution downloaded on every CI run | `~/.konan` not preserved between runs | [caching-and-gradle](references/caching-and-gradle.md) |
```
