# kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain

A skill that teaches the agent to build, test and lint Kotlin projects with the Kotlin Toolchain CLI. Useful when the repo ships project.yaml and module.yaml.

## What it does

The skill loads when the agent builds, runs, tests, packages or lints a Kotlin/Java project on the Kotlin Toolchain — JetBrains' unified CLI, formerly Amper. Configuration is declarative YAML instead of Gradle build scripts. If the project root carries `kotlin` and `kotlin.bat` wrappers, the global `kotlin` detects them and proxies into them, pinning the project to the wrapper's version. Run commands from the project root, or the wrapper never wins.

Inside you get the project layout (`project.yaml`, `libs.versions.toml`, `module.yaml` with products like `jvm/app` and `android/app`), dependency syntax with `exported`, `compile-only` and `runtime-only` qualifiers, `<name>.module-template.yaml` templates for shared settings, and platform directories such as `src@jvm/` and `src@ios/`. Checks are covered too: `kotlin check` runs tests plus every registered check, filterable by name and module. Only `tests` is built in — detekt, ktlint and API-compatibility verification have to be registered as local-plugin tasks in `plugin.yaml`.

For iOS modules the Toolchain generates and manages the Xcode project, creating `module.xcodeproj` and a default `Info.plist` on first build. A pre-existing `Info.plist` is used as-is and never completed, so it must carry the required `CFBundle*` keys itself — otherwise the `.app` has no bundle id and the simulator refuses to install it. Worth checking before the first build, especially in projects migrated from Gradle. The Toolchain itself is in Alpha.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --path skills/kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build and run a Kotlin project on the Toolchain instead of Gradle
- declare a module in `module.yaml` with catalog-based dependencies
- share settings across modules through a template and an `apply:` list
- run tests and registered checks with a single `kotlin check`
- split platform code into `src@jvm/` and `src@ios/` directories

## Example prompts
- Build the project with ./kotlin build and show me what failed
- Add the dependency from $libs.ktor.client to module.yaml and verify the build passes
- Why does the simulator reject the iOS app? Check Info.plist in the ios/app module

# Kotlin Toolchain

JetBrains' unified CLI for Kotlin (JVM, Android, iOS, multiplatform) and Java projects, in Alpha.
Configuration is declarative YAML instead of Gradle build scripts.

## Installation

Prefer the project's checked-in wrapper: `./kotlin build` needs nothing installed — the wrapper downloads
the CLI itself. Install a global CLI only when there is no wrapper (e.g. before `kotlin init`):

```sh
sdk install kotlintoolchain      # SDKMAN (macOS / Linux / WSL)
```

The `kotlin` command then auto-provisions its JDK on first use. Other install options (installer scripts,
IntelliJ IDEA plugin) live at <https://kotlin-toolchain.org/>.

If the project root ships wrapper scripts (`kotlin` / `kotlin.bat`), the global `kotlin` detects them and
proxies into them, pinning the project to the wrapper's version. Always invoke `kotlin` from the project
root so the wrapper wins; never call a globally installed binary directly when a wrapper exists.

## CLI commands

For the detailed list of commands and their options, run `kotlin --help` or `kotlin <command> --help`.
