## What it does

The skill loads when you author or design a local Kotlin Toolchain plugin — a `jvm/amper-plugin` module that ships task actions, settings and generated sources. It lays out the directory structure, the contents of `project.yaml`, `module.yaml` and `plugin.yaml`, plus patterns for `@Configurable` and `@TaskAction`. Adaptable examples live in `references/examples.md`.

Reach for a plugin when the declarative YAML has no step for what you need: code generation, schema compilation, pre-release verification, version stamping or a named CLI command. Inside, you keep one `@TaskAction` per file, shared helpers without the annotation, and a settings interface whose getters carry the defaults. Tasks talk through matched paths — the producer writes into `@Output`, the consumer reads `${tasks.<task>.action.<param>}`.

One caveat: Kotlin Toolchain cannot consume Gradle plugins, so porting an existing one is not what this skill is for. Plugins also cannot be published to a public registry yet, which means you should keep at least one consumer module in the repo — otherwise there is no way to exercise the plugin end to end. Tasks with no `@Output` are never cached and always re-run, and inputs like Git history or the network need execution avoidance turned off by hand.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain-plugin-authoring -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain-plugin-authoring/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain-plugin-authoring/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain-plugin-authoring -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain-plugin-authoring/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain-plugin-authoring -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain-plugin-authoring/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain-plugin-authoring
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain-plugin-authoring/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain-plugin-authoring -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --path skills/kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain-plugin-authoring
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain-plugin-authoring/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain-plugin-authoring -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/kotlin-tooling-kotlin-toolchain-plugin-authoring/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- move code generation into a build step module.yaml cannot express
- wire schema or contract checks into the build before release
- expose a named CLI command for a repeated workflow
- define plugin settings with defaults that consumers can override
- connect one task's output to another task's input

## Example prompts
- Help me write a local Kotlin Toolchain plugin with a code generation step
- Check my `plugin.yaml` — are the `@Output` of one task and the `@Input` of another wired correctly?
- Sketch a `@Configurable interface Settings` with a nested checks block

# Kotlin Toolchain Plugin Authoring

Local plugins are the official escape hatch from declarative YAML: a `jvm/amper-plugin` module shipping
task actions, settings, and generated sources/resources alongside your project. Code patterns to adapt are
in [references/examples.md](references/examples.md).

## When to write a plugin

Write one when you need:

- A build-time step a library's workflow expects (code generation, schema compilation, resource
  transformation, version stamping).
- Custom verification wired into the build (pre-release checks, schema validation, contract tests).
- A build-time value published into the JAR classpath or downstream tasks — the closest analog to Gradle's
  `project.version`.
- A named CLI command for a repeated workflow (`./kotlin do release`).

Don't write one when `module.yaml` already covers it (dependencies, JDK provisioning, source layouts,
basic packaging), and never to reuse a Gradle plugin — the Kotlin Toolchain cannot consume them.

## Layout

```
repo-root/
├── kotlin, kotlin.bat            # wrappers (from `kotlin init`)
├── project.yaml                  # registers the plugin
├── plugins/<name>/
