# kotlin-tooling-immutable-collections-0-5-x-migration

This skill migrates Kotlin and Java code from kotlinx.collections.immutable 0.3.x and 0.4.x to 0.5.x by bumping the version and renaming calls the compiler flags.

## What it does

In 0.5.x every copy-returning method on the persistent collections got a participial name: `add` is now `adding`, `removeAt` is `removingAt`, `set` is `replacingAt`, `put` is `putting`, `clear` is `cleared`. The old names carry `@Deprecated(WARNING, ReplaceWith(...))`, so the compiler names the replacement at each call site. Parameters, order and return type stay the same — it is a call-site rename, binary compatible.

The skill starts by locating the build command in `README.md`, `CLAUDE.md` or `AGENTS.md`, then compiles the project on its current version to confirm it is green. After that the dependency is bumped to the latest 0.5.x, found with `grep -rn kotlinx-collections-immutable` across the build files. If the build pins artifact hashes, say in `gradle/verification-metadata.xml`, those need updating too — copying the checksum out of the dependency-verification error is cheaper than regenerating the file.

The rule that matters: trust the compiler, never find/replace by name. The same method names live on `MutableList`, `MutableMap`, `MutableSet` and on `.Builder` types, which mutate in place and are not deprecated. Only flagged sites get renamed. An `Unresolved reference` after a rename means the name does not belong to that receiver — check the receiver's declared type, not the method name. For Java callers, if the build does not report javac deprecation warnings, you have to grep the `.java` files for the old names yourself.

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-immutable-collections-0-5-x-migration -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/kotlin-tooling-immutable-collections-0-5-x-migration/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/kotlin-tooling-immutable-collections-0-5-x-migration/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-immutable-collections-0-5-x-migration -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/kotlin-tooling-immutable-collections-0-5-x-migration/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-immutable-collections-0-5-x-migration -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/kotlin-tooling-immutable-collections-0-5-x-migration/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills kotlin-tooling-immutable-collections-0-5-x-migration
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/kotlin-tooling-immutable-collections-0-5-x-migration/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --skill kotlin-tooling-immutable-collections-0-5-x-migration -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Kotlin/kotlin-agent-skills --path skills/kotlin-tooling-immutable-collections-0-5-x-migration
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/kotlin-tooling-immutable-collections-0-5-x-migration/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

## When to use it
- bump kotlinx.collections.immutable from 0.4.x to 0.5.x without hunting renames by hand
- work through compiler warnings like "Use adding() instead" one call site at a time
- rename calls in Java code when javac stays quiet about deprecation
- migrate custom `PersistentList` and `PersistentMap` implementations along with their callers
- drop `@Suppress("DEPRECATION")` annotations that no longer suppress anything

## Example prompts
- Migrate the project to kotlinx.collections.immutable 0.5.x: bump the version and fix the deprecation warnings.
- The compiler says "Use removingAll() instead" — apply the renames across every call site.
- I have classes implementing `PersistentMap`; move their deprecated overrides to the new names.

# kotlinx.collections.immutable 0.5.x Migration

The 0.5.x line renames every copy-returning method on the persistent collections to a
participial form (per [KEEP-0459]) and deprecates the old names at `WARNING` level with a
`ReplaceWith` hint. Migrating is a mechanical, binary-compatible, semantics-preserving
call-site rename — same parameters, order, and return type; only the name changes.
