## What it does

The skill guides an agent through referral strategy for SaaS and AI products. It starts with context: product type, user base size, and whether the goal is signups or purchases. Then it produces a breakdown covering reward model, mechanism type, attribution, anti-fraud, tool choice, and KPIs.

Comparison tables come built in. Referral versus affiliate versus influencer, three reward models (two-way, one-way, tiered), three mechanisms (link, code, social sharing), four tracking methods. Benchmarks are included too: referral conversion of 3%-5% against 1%-2% for ads, rewards usually 10%-30% of product price.

The skill reads a root `contextus.md` when present and loads only the modules the task needs. Without it, it falls back to project material or facts you provide. It does not write referral landing copy — that is `landing-page-generator` territory. Install runs through `npx skills add`, or `gh skill install` for GitHub Copilot.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill referral-program -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/referral-program/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/referral-program/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill referral-program -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/referral-program/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill referral-program -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/referral-program/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install kostja94/marketing-skills referral-program
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/referral-program/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill referral-program -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/kostja94/marketing-skills --path skills/channels/partnerships/referral-program
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/referral-program/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill referral-program -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- pick between two-way and one-way rewards
- size the reward against product price
- set an attribution window and first-touch rule
- block self-referrals and fake accounts
- decide between self-build and a third-party tool

## Example prompts
- Plan a referral program for our SaaS: reward model, tracking, anti-fraud
- Compare link-based and code-based mechanics for a mobile app
- Which KPIs should we track for a referral program, and how do we set attribution?

# Channels: Referral

Guides referral program strategy for AI/SaaS products. Leverage existing users to drive growth; 3%-5% conversion vs 1%-2% for ads; CAC 50%-70% lower; referred users LTV 30%-50% higher, retention 20%-30% higher. Referral is necessity in overseas markets, not alternative.

**When invoking**: On **first use**, if helpful, open with 1-2 sentences on what this skill covers and why it matters, then provide the main output. On **subsequent use** or when the user asks to skip, go directly to the main output.

## Initial Assessment

**Project context:** Read root `contextus.md` when present and load only the modules relevant to this task. Without Contextus, use available project material or user-provided facts and ask for missing information; do not create a parallel context system.

Identify:
1. **Product type**: SaaS, AI tool, subscription
2. **User base**: Size, engagement, retention
3. **Goal**: Signups, purchases, or both

## Referral vs. Affiliate vs. Influencer

| Dimension | Referral | Affiliate | Influencer |
|-----------|----------|-----------|------------|
| **Who** | Existing users | Professional promoters | KOLs |
| **Incentive** | Discounts, credits | Commission | Fees, product |
| **Barrier** | Low (all users) | Medium | High |
| **Conversion** | 3%-5% | Varies | Varies |

**Referral vs affiliate**: Referral needs no landing page or application; integrated in dashboard. Affiliate requires landing page and approval.

## Reward Models

| Model | Use |
|-------|-----|
| **Two-way** | Both referrer and referee get rewards; highest participation |
| **One-way** | Only referrer rewarded; cost control |
| **Tiered** | Rewards increase with referral count (e.g. $10 for 1-5, $15 for 6-10, $20 for 11+); incentivizes volume |

**Benchmark**: Rewards typically 10%-30% of product price; ~11% off or ~$21 value; weak incentives = low participation. Triggers: signup, purchase, activation, or sustained use.

## Mechanism Types

| Type | Use |
|------|-----|
| **Link-based** | Unique referral link; easy to implement; accurate tracking; share via email, social, SMS; works for web and app |
| **Code-based** | Referral code (e.g. FRIEND20); memorable; offline events; mobile-friendly input |
