## What it does

\`distill` reads an existing codebase and drafts `.feature` files from the behavior it finds. It can target a module, directory, or function area, and it checks existing feature files first so already covered behavior is not copied again.

The workflow uses a Git worktree, checks project terms against `beat/CONTEXT.md`, and reviews each generated artifact for placeholders, contradictions, scope problems, and ambiguity. If `design.md` is produced, recovered decisions go through an ADR check before an optional move to `docs/adr/`.

Before the first file write, the skill must invoke `using-git-worktrees`; if that prerequisite cannot be used, it follows the stated fallback. The generated artifacts are independently checked with `/beat:verify` and committed before they are presented.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kirkchen/beat --skill distill -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/distill/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/distill/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kirkchen/beat --skill distill -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/distill/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kirkchen/beat --skill distill -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/distill/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install kirkchen/beat distill
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/distill/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kirkchen/beat --skill distill -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/kirkchen/beat --path skills/distill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/distill/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kirkchen/beat --skill distill -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/kirkchen/beat/tree/HEAD/skills/distill/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- extract BDD specs from existing code
- turn a module into Gherkin feature files
- bring an established codebase into Beat
- scan existing features before drafting duplicates
- check project terms in `beat/CONTEXT.md`

## Example prompts
- Distill the current behavior of the authentication module into draft feature files.
- Turn `src/payments` into Gherkin specs, then scan existing feature files for overlap.
- Bring this repository into Beat with distill, use a Git worktree, and run `/beat:verify` on the result.

Distill — reverse-engineer Gherkin feature files from existing code.

Use this to bring existing codebases into the Beat workflow. The output is draft `.feature` files that describe **current behavior** (not aspirational), verified independently by `/beat:verify`.

<decision_boundary>

**Use for:**
- Extracting BDD specs from an existing codebase that doesn't have feature files yet
- Bringing a module, directory, or functionality into the Beat workflow retroactively
- Generating draft `.feature` files that describe what the code currently does

**NOT for:**
- Designing new behavior or features (use `/beat:design`)
- Writing aspirational specs for code that doesn't exist yet (use `/beat:design`)
- Greenfield projects with no existing code to distill
- Exploring ideas or thinking through a problem (use `/beat:explore`)

**Trigger examples:**
- "Distill the auth module into feature files" / "Extract specs from existing code" / "Bring this codebase into Beat"
- Should NOT trigger: "design a new feature" / "write specs for something we want to build" / "explore this idea"

</decision_boundary>

<HARD-GATE>
Before writing any artifact files: you MUST invoke superpowers:using-git-worktrees.
Distilled artifacts live in a change container that flows through verify → archive.
Worktree isolation ensures they don't contaminate the main workspace.

Before writing feature files: you MUST run the glossary check (see step 6) and ensure
every project-specific term used in scenarios is defined in `beat/CONTEXT.md`.
Create the glossary lazily — only when the first term is added.

After writing each artifact: you MUST run the four-check spec self-review
(placeholder / consistency / scope / ambiguity). Fix issues inline.

While writing `design.md`: you MUST run the three-condition ADR gate
(hard-to-reverse + surprising + real trade-off — see `references/adr-format.md`)
on each Key Decision recovered from the code. When all three hold, offer to lift
it into `docs/adr/`. The user may decline. NEVER invent rationale the code
doesn't show — mark it unverified or ask the user.

If a prerequisite skill is unavailable (not installed), continue with fallback — but NEVER skip
because you judged it unnecessary. If the user explicitly asks to skip the worktree, say that
the change container will be written and committed on the current branch, confirm once, then
proceed there — never imply an isolation you don't have.
</HARD-GATE>

**Prerequisites** (invoke before proceeding)

| Superpower | When | Priority |
|-----------|------|----------|
| using-git-worktrees | Before first file write | MUST |

If a superpower is unavailable (skill not installed), skip and continue.

## Rationalization Prevention

| Thought | Reality |
|---------|---------|
| "I don't need a worktree for just writing feature files" | Distilled artifacts flow through verify and archive. Without isolation, they won't carry forward correctly. |
