## What it does

The skill keeps three Agent Builder resources apart: a tool (a function an agent calls), an agent (an LLM with instructions and a chosen toolset), and a chat session with an existing agent. Creating a tool does not create an agent. So the first step is classifying the task, and only then touching a write API.

Before any write it reads live data with `GET kbn:/api/agent_builder/tools` and `GET kbn:/api/agent_builder/agents`. That keeps duplicate ids and invented tool references out of the payload. If you only ask what agents exist, the skill stops at the read and lists each id with its name. An empty list gets reported as empty.

Tools come in three types: `index_search` against a specific index pattern, `esql` with `?param` placeholders and a `params` object, and `workflow` pointing at an existing workflow id. The POST endpoint is strict: `name` is rejected on tools, index search configuration wants `pattern` rather than `index`, and each ES|QL param accepts only `type` and `description`. Violations come back as 400, so it is worth checking the payload before sending it. Everything runs through the `elastic` CLI; when it is missing, the skill explains what it is for instead of calling the HTTP API directly or guessing credentials.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill kibana-agent-builder -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/kibana-agent-builder/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/kibana-agent-builder/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill kibana-agent-builder -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/kibana-agent-builder/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill kibana-agent-builder -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/kibana-agent-builder/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install elastic/agent-skills kibana-agent-builder
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/kibana-agent-builder/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill kibana-agent-builder -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills --path skills/kibana/kibana-agent-builder
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/kibana-agent-builder/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill kibana-agent-builder -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/kibana/kibana-agent-builder/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create a search tool scoped to one index pattern
- build an agent with instructions and a list of tool_ids
- list the agents already defined in Kibana
- test an ES|QL tool before an agent starts using it
- update the description and configuration of an existing tool

## Example prompts
- create an index_search tool over the customer-feedback-* indices
- list the agents in Agent Builder
- create an agent with instructions for triaging feedback and check the id is free

# Kibana Agent Builder

Create, inspect, update, delete, and test Agent Builder **tools** and **agents**. Ground LLM responses in Elasticsearch
data through scoped search tools, parameterized ES|QL, and workflow integrations.

## Environment Configuration

This skill executes Elasticsearch operations through the `elastic` CLI. If the
[`elastic` CLI](https://github.com/elastic/cli#configuration) is not installed, tell the user what it is needed for. Do
not guess credentials, call the HTTP API directly, or attempt other workarounds.

This skill references operations in HTTP-shorthand form (e.g., `GET /`, `GET /_cat/indices`, `GET /{index}/_mapping`,
`GET /{index}/_settings/index.mode`, `POST /_query`). The [Operations](#operations) table at the end of this document
maps each shorthand to the equivalent `elastic` CLI command — always use the CLI rather than calling the HTTP API
directly.

## Resource model

Agent Builder exposes three distinct resource kinds — do not conflate them:

| Kind                    | Purpose                                                                                            | Typical API                                  |
| ----------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------- |
| **Tool**                | Reusable function an agent invokes to retrieve or act on data (`index_search`, `esql`, `workflow`) | `POST kbn:/api/agent_builder/tools`          |
| **Agent**               | LLM entity with instructions and a curated toolset                                                 | `POST kbn:/api/agent_builder/agents`         |
| **Chat / conversation** | Ephemeral messaging session with an existing agent                                                 | `POST kbn:/api/agent_builder/converse/async` |
