## What it does

The skill hands your agent a ready method for sizing a bet against your bankroll. Inside you get the formula `f* = (p * b - q) / b`, a quick-reference table by win rate and payoff ratio, a breakdown of fractional Kelly, and a classification of edge strength. Crypto-specific material covers simultaneous positions: uncorrelated bets are scaled so the fractions sum to no more than 1.0, while correlated ones (several memecoins that dump together) get trimmed through an effective number of independent bets.

Edge estimation runs off trade history — win rate and the ratio of average win to average loss. The skill ships Python code for that: a calculation over a list of trades and a `wilson_lower` function for the lower bound of the Wilson score interval, so a lucky sample does not inflate your win rate. It also states the data floor: 50 trades for any Kelly calculation, 100+ for half Kelly.

The catch sits in the method itself. Full Kelly is almost never the right call. Estimation error makes it overbet, and overbetting by 2x wipes out long-term growth entirely. The author recommends 0.25x–0.5x fractions, and 0.10x for a new strategy with fewer than 30 trades in the sample. When edge is zero or negative, the optimal bet is zero.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill kelly-criterion -a claude-code
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/kelly-criterion/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/kelly-criterion/
### Codex
1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill kelly-criterion -a codex
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/kelly-criterion/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/
### Cursor
1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill kelly-criterion -a cursor
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/kelly-criterion/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/
### GitHub Copilot
1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills kelly-criterion
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
gemini skills install https://github.com/agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --path skills/kelly-criterion
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/kelly-criterion/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill kelly-criterion -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/kelly-criterion/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- size a position from a known win rate and payoff ratio
- estimate a strategy's edge from trade history
- pick a fractional Kelly multiplier that fits the sample size
- trim position sizes when bets are correlated
- check whether a small sample inflated the win rate

## Example prompts
- size this position with Kelly for a 55% win rate and 2:1 payoff
- estimate the edge of my strategy from the trades in trades.csv
- I hold four memecoin positions — recalculate the fractions with a correlation adjustment

# Kelly Criterion — Optimal Bet Sizing

The Kelly criterion is the mathematically optimal bet size that maximizes long-term geometric growth of capital. Developed by John Kelly at Bell Labs in 1956, it answers a precise question: given a known edge, what fraction of your bankroll should you risk to maximize the compounding rate?

**Core insight**: Betting too small leaves growth on the table. Betting too large increases ruin risk and actually *reduces* long-term growth. Kelly finds the exact optimum between these extremes.

**Practical insight**: You should almost never use full Kelly. Estimation error in your edge means full Kelly will overbets in practice. Use fractional Kelly (0.25x to 0.5x) for real trading.

---

## The Kelly Formula

For a binary outcome (win or lose):

```
f* = (p * b - q) / b
```

Where:
- `f*` = optimal fraction of bankroll to bet
- `p` = probability of winning
- `q` = probability of losing (1 - p)
- `b` = payoff ratio (average win / average loss)

**Equivalent forms**:

```
f* = p - q / b
f* = p - (1 - p) / b
f* = (p * b - (1 - p)) / b
```

**Edge** = `p * b - q` = expected value per unit risked. Kelly only makes sense when edge > 0. If edge is zero or negative, the optimal bet is zero — do not trade.

### Quick Reference

| Win Rate | Payoff 1:1 | Payoff 1.5:1 | Payoff 2:1 | Payoff 3:1 |
|----------|-----------|-------------|-----------|-----------|
| 40%      | -20%      | -6.7%       | 10%       | 20%       |
| 45%      | -10%      | 3.3%        | 15%       | 25%       |
| 50%      | 0%        | 16.7%       | 25%       | 33.3%     |
| 55%      | 10%       | 18.3%       | 27.5%     | 35%       |
| 60%      | 20%       | 26.7%       | 35%       | 40%       |

*Values are full Kelly fraction. In practice, use 0.25x to 0.5x of these numbers.*

---

## Why Use Fractional Kelly

Full Kelly assumes you know `p` and `b` exactly. You never do. Here is why fractional Kelly is essential:

### 1. Estimation Error

Your win rate estimate from 100 trades has a standard error of roughly ±5%. If your true win rate is 55% but you estimate 60%, full Kelly will overbets by ~50%, which *reduces* long-term growth below what half Kelly would achieve.
