# k2f-syllabus

Builds an instructor-ready course syllabus from a brief, topic list, or old one: outcomes, week-by-week schedule, grading weights, policies. Export lands in PDF via K2F.

## What it does

The skill works in two passes. First the agent writes `content_and_design.md`, a blueprint covering one identity block for the course (title, code, contact, term dates, prerequisites), 3–6 learning outcomes tied to assessments, a schedule built from 6–12 units, grading categories that sum to 100%, and short policy sections. Design intent goes in the same file: hierarchy, row density, one date format, a print-safe palette.

Second pass turns that blueprint into a `.K2F` document. The agent edits the semantic tree, runs pack and verify, then exports — usually to PDF. Layout, type, and theme come from the engine, so nobody is hand-placing elements.

It sits on top of the core **k2f** skill and needs it installed first: `npx skills add suzheng/k2f --skill k2f`. Skip that and the second pass has nothing to build on. The workflow has built-in checks: weights must total 100%, every grading label should map to a schedule row, contact details stay in one place. Required policy text is inserted word for word only when you supply it; otherwise drafts are flagged for review.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add suzheng/k2f --skill k2f-syllabus -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/k2f-syllabus/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/k2f-syllabus/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add suzheng/k2f --skill k2f-syllabus -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/k2f-syllabus/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add suzheng/k2f --skill k2f-syllabus -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/k2f-syllabus/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install suzheng/k2f k2f-syllabus
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/k2f-syllabus/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add suzheng/k2f --skill k2f-syllabus -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/suzheng/k2f --path skills/education/k2f-syllabus
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/k2f-syllabus/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add suzheng/k2f --skill k2f-syllabus -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/suzheng/k2f/tree/HEAD/skills/education/k2f-syllabus/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- draft a course syllabus with grading weights that add up
- compress a sprawling topic list into 6–12 teaching units
- modernise an old syllabus and export it as a clean PDF
- map each learning outcome to an assignment and a deadline
- keep policies and course materials in one short section

## Example prompts
- Draft a syllabus from this course description: 10 weeks, two seminars a week, final project
- Rework `syllabus_2023.md`: cut topics to 8 units and rebalance the weights
- Put every deadline on one schedule grid and export the syllabus as PDF

description: Draft instructor-ready course syllabi with aligned outcomes, a scannable schedule spine, grading architecture, and policy layers from prompts, outlines, or legacy syllabi. Use when the user asks for a syllabus, course outline, curriculum map, or term schedule for a class they are teaching or redesigning. Create syllabi with AI-native design and the highest aesthetic standards, powered by the K2F format and engine. Purpose-built for AI agents, K2F lets them focus on semantic content and design intent while automatically handling layout, typography, and formatting complexity.

# K2F Syllabus — AI-Native Aesthetic Design

## Purpose

Teach agents to blueprint a **course syllabus** before layout: day-one essentials, scannable layering, and aligned outcomes, meetings, and grades—without policy dumps, orphaned readings, or schedules that hide assessment logic.

## Built on K2F

This skill produces course syllabi as `.K2F` documents. Follow the **k2f** skill for authoring: unpack or init a workspace, edit the semantic tree, run pack/verify, then export. K2F keeps agents on *meaning* (sections, schedule rows, policy blocks)—not pixel coordinates—while the engine compiles layout, typography, and theme.

Before you build, install the core skill: `npx skills add suzheng/k2f --skill k2f`.

## When to Use

- An instructor needs a new or revised syllabus (higher ed, professional continuing ed, or structured K–12 course overview).
- The user supplies partial inputs: catalog description, week topics, textbook, or an old syllabus to modernize.
- Not for supplementary reading-list generators, exam prediction from past tests, or lesson-level daily plans (use **k2f-lesson-plan**).

## Workflow

### Step 1. Generate the content_and_design.md

One blueprint for **what** belongs in the syllabus and **how** it should read when printed or shared as PDF. Structure it so the schedule spine and shared facts are named once and referenced everywhere the k2f skill will map to sections.

**Sub-steps**

1. **Route & clarify** — Infer discipline, term length, meeting pattern, and audience (intro undergrad through professional). Ask at most two high-leverage questions (e.g., mandated policy text vs. draft, credit hours); default term length when unspecified.

2. **Course identity** — One **identity block**: title, catalog code, instructor contact, term dates, room/platform, office hours, prerequisites—do not repeat elsewhere.
