## What it does

The skill walks the agent through a fixed sequence. First a mechanism lock: agency, solicitation ID, page limits, required sections, scoring criteria. Then a four-question audit — central hypothesis, why now, what is actually new, and whether the work is feasible. A separate step drafts the Specific Aims page at 400–550 words: hook, gap, long-term goal, hypothesis, two or three verb-led aims, impact close.

The output of that stage is `content_and_design.md`, a blueprint that pairs the semantic content with design intent — tone, heading hierarchy, density, palette. From there the `k2f` skill instantiates pages as a `.K2F` document, and the engine compiles layout, typography and theme into PDF, DOCX and other formats. Install the core skill first: `npx skills add suzheng/k2f --skill k2f`.

The skill forbids inventing evidence. Missing preliminary data gets flagged instead of filled in, and citations or budget figures are not made up. It also pushes back on aims that share a single point of failure — merge them or redesign, because one failed aim should not sink the rest. Worth knowing before you get attached to a draft.

Most of the value sits in structuring, not final proofreading: NIH, NSF, ERC and foundation calls differ in depth and section order, and the skill reshapes the outline to match the one you name.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add suzheng/k2f --skill k2f-grant-proposal -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/k2f-grant-proposal/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/k2f-grant-proposal/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add suzheng/k2f --skill k2f-grant-proposal -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/k2f-grant-proposal/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add suzheng/k2f --skill k2f-grant-proposal -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/k2f-grant-proposal/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install suzheng/k2f k2f-grant-proposal
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/k2f-grant-proposal/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add suzheng/k2f --skill k2f-grant-proposal -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/suzheng/k2f --path skills/academic/k2f-grant-proposal
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/k2f-grant-proposal/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add suzheng/k2f --skill k2f-grant-proposal -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/suzheng/k2f/tree/HEAD/skills/academic/k2f-grant-proposal/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- draft a Specific Aims page from rough notes
- rewrite a hypothesis so it can be falsified
- split aims that depend on each other's success
- fit strategy sections inside a page limit
- order sections to match a funder's review criteria

## Example prompts
- build an NIH R01 proposal from these notes and the solicitation
- rewrite the Specific Aims page so the hypothesis is testable
- assign word budgets to the strategy sections under the page limit

description: Turn research ideas, preliminary data, and agency solicitations into reviewer-ready grant proposals with a fundable hypothesis, independent specific aims, and agency-aligned significance and innovation. Use when the user asks for a grant proposal, specific aims page, NIH R01/R21/K, NSF proposal, or foundation grant narrative. Create grant proposals with AI-native design and the highest aesthetic standards, powered by the K2F format and engine. Purpose-built for AI agents, K2F lets them focus on semantic content and design intent while automatically handling layout, typography, and formatting complexity.

# K2F Grant Proposal — AI-Native Aesthetic Design

## Purpose

Teach agents to blueprint fundable grant narratives before layout: a falsifiable hypothesis, explicit gaps, independent aims, reviewer-scannable hierarchy, and honest feasibility—without inventing data or drowning reviewers in prose.

## Built on K2F

This skill produces grant packages as `.K2F` documents. Follow the **k2f** skill for authoring: unpack or init a workspace, edit the semantic tree, run pack/verify, then export. K2F keeps agents on *meaning* (section roles, aims, evidence)—not pixel coordinates—while the engine compiles layout, typography, and theme into consistent output across PDF, DOCX, and other formats.

Before you build, install the core skill: `npx skills add suzheng/k2f --skill k2f`.

## When to Use

- Drafting or restructuring NIH, NSF, ERC, or foundation proposals from notes or prior work.
- Rebuilding a weak Specific Aims page before the full research strategy.
- Aligning content depth and visual hierarchy to mechanism limits and review rubrics.

## Workflow

### Step 1. Generate the content_and_design.md

Single blueprint for semantic content and aesthetic intent. Structure it with labeled blocks the k2f skill can map to pages later.

**Sub-steps**

1. **Mechanism lock** — Agency, solicitation ID, mechanism, page limits, required sections, scoring criteria (NIH: Significance, Innovation, Approach, Investigators, Environment; NSF: Intellectual Merit, Broader Impacts). Drop optional material that exceeds limits.

2. **Four-question audit** — Answer in prose using user-supplied evidence only:
   - Central hypothesis: testable, falsifiable (not “we will study X”).
   - Why now: gap, urgency, new tools or data.
```
