## What it does

This skill evaluates fictional settings against the core principle that believable worlds evolve rather than appear fully formed. It checks stories for specific failure states, focusing on consequence-free magic and non-human species acting like humans in costume. The diagnostic traces a three-order consequence cascade to map how speculative elements alter practical reality, power structures, and cultural norms.

The instructions focus entirely on auditing narrative setups. They offer targeted questions about economic scarcity, organizational crises, and religious schisms. If you need to generate a universe from scratch or fix character arcs, this tool will not do that. It is an evaluation framework, not a creative generator.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill worldbuilding -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/worldbuilding/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/worldbuilding/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill worldbuilding -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/worldbuilding/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill worldbuilding -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/worldbuilding/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jwynia/agent-skills worldbuilding
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/worldbuilding/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill worldbuilding -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills --path skills/creative/fiction/worldbuilding/worldbuilding
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/worldbuilding/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill worldbuilding -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/creative/fiction/worldbuilding/worldbuilding/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- identify weak trade logistics and missing resource scarcity in story settings
- trace secondary and tertiary social effects of speculative technologies
- deepen flat non-human species beyond cosmetic physical traits
- uncover artificial institutions that lack historical crises and contradictions

## Example prompts
- Run a worldbuilding diagnosis on the trade economy of the desert faction
- Apply the consequence cascade to our story's memory-erasing tech
- Evaluate whether this alien species feels like humans in costume

# Worldbuilding: Diagnostic Skill

Diagnose world-level problems in fictional settings. Identify what's missing or unconvincing and recommend specific interventions.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Setting feels like a painted backdrop
- Technology/magic hasn't transformed society
- Institutions feel designed rather than evolved
- Economy doesn't make sense
- Cultures lack depth

Do NOT use this skill when:
- Story problems are character-focused (use character-arc)
- Plot structure issues (use scene-sequencing)
- Need to generate worlds from scratch (use systemic-worldbuilding)

## Core Principle

**Worlds fail when they feel designed rather than evolved.**

Good worldbuilding creates the perception that the setting has history, internal logic, and processes that operate independently of the plot.

## The World States

### W1: Backdrop World
**Symptoms:** Setting exists but has no independent logic
**Interventions:** systemic-worldbuilding (trace consequences)

### W2: World Without Consequences
**Symptoms:** Technology/magic exists but hasn't transformed society
**Interventions:** Consequence Cascade Analysis

### W3: Institutions Without History
**Symptoms:** Organizations feel designed last week
**Interventions:** Organic Institutional Design

### W4: Economy Doesn't Make Sense
**Symptoms:** Trade exists without supply chains; prices arbitrary
**Interventions:** economic-systems

### W5: Belief Systems Are Shallow
**Symptoms:** Religion is flavor without theological depth
**Interventions:** belief-systems

### W6: Culture Without Depth
**Symptoms:** Traditions feel random; surface-level aesthetic
**Interventions:** memetic-depth

### W7: Flat Non-Humans
**Symptoms:** Aliens/species are humans in costume
**Interventions:** conlang, alien-sensory frameworks

### W7.5: Language Feels Generic
**Symptoms:** Names sound like English; no linguistic texture
**Interventions:** conlang, language-evolution

## Consequence Cascade

Apply to any major speculative element:

```
Initial Element
├── 1st Order: Direct practical effects
│   ├── Who gains immediate advantage?
│   ├── What becomes obsolete?
│   └── Technical limitations?
├── 2nd Order: Systemic adaptations
│   ├── How do economic structures adapt?
│   ├── How do power structures respond?
