## What it does

This skill guides the agent to locate locale files and run the `jta` CLI. The tool processes JSON entries in batches, calling the LLM three times per batch to evaluate and refine translations. It preserves variable placeholders, HTML markup, and URLs without breaking the schema.

Terminology is tracked under the `.jta/` folder inside `terminology.json`. You can maintain brand names or lock specific technical phrases across locales. Running with `--incremental` processes only newly added or modified keys, while `--keys` and `--exclude-keys` limit execution to specific path patterns.

A missing API key halts execution immediately. You must export an environment variable for Anthropic, Gemini, or OpenAI. When the binary is absent, the agent installs it via Homebrew on macOS or downloads the release binary on Linux.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ckanner/agent-skills --skill jta -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/jta/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/jta/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ckanner/agent-skills --skill jta -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/jta/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ckanner/agent-skills --skill jta -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/jta/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ckanner/agent-skills jta
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/jta/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ckanner/agent-skills --skill jta -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ckanner/agent-skills --path jta
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/jta/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ckanner/agent-skills --skill jta -a opencode
```

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/ckanner/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/jta/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- translate JSON localization files into multiple target languages
- update modified i18n keys without reprocessing the entire dictionary
- preserve placeholders, markup, and URLs inside translated strings
- enforce consistent glossary terms across translation files

## Example prompts
- Translate locales/en.json to German and French
- Run incremental translation on locales/en.json for Japanese
- Translate only settings.* keys from en.json into Spanish

# Jta Translation

AI-powered JSON internationalization file translator with Agentic reflection mechanism.

## When to Use This Skill

- User asks to translate JSON i18n/locale files
- User mentions "internationalization", "i18n", "l10n", or "locale"
- User wants to add new languages to their project
- User needs to update existing translations
- User mentions specific languages like "translate to Chinese/Japanese/Korean"

## Core Capabilities

1. **Agentic Translation**: AI translates, evaluates, and improves its own work (3x API calls per batch)
2. **Smart Terminology**: Automatically detects and maintains consistent terms (brand names, technical terms)
3. **Format Protection**: Preserves `{variables}`, `{{placeholders}}`, HTML tags, URLs, Markdown
4. **Incremental Mode**: Only translates new/changed content (saves 80-90% API cost on updates)
5. **27 Languages**: Including RTL languages (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Urdu)

## Instructions

### Step 1: Check if jta is installed

```bash
# Check if jta exists
if ! command -v jta &> /dev/null; then
  echo "jta not found, will install"
fi
```

### Step 2: Install jta if needed

```bash
# Detect OS and install jta
OS="$(uname -s)"
ARCH="$(uname -m)"
if [[ "$OS" == "Darwin"* ]]; then
  # macOS - try Homebrew first
  if command -v brew &> /dev/null; then
    brew tap hikanner/jta
    brew install jta
  else
    # Download binary
    if [[ "$ARCH" == "arm64" ]]; then
      curl -L https://github.com/hikanner/jta/releases/latest/download/jta-darwin-arm64 -o jta
    else
      curl -L https://github.com/hikanner/jta/releases/latest/download/jta-darwin-amd64 -o jta
    fi
    chmod +x jta
    sudo mv jta /usr/local/bin/
  fi
elif [[ "$OS" == "Linux"* ]]; then
  # Linux
  curl -L https://github.com/hikanner/jta/releases/latest/download/jta-linux-amd64 -o jta
  chmod +x jta
  sudo mv jta /usr/local/bin/
fi
# Verify installation
jta --version
```

### Step 3: Check for API key and set provider

Jta requires an AI provider API key. Check in this order and set the provider flag:

```bash
# Detect API key and set provider flag
if [[ -n "$ANTHROPIC_API_KEY" ]]; then
  echo "✓ Anthropic API key found"
  PROVIDER_FLAG="--provider anthropic"
elif [[ -n "$GEMINI_API_KEY" ]]; then
  echo "✓ Gemini API key found"
  PROVIDER_FLAG="--provider gemini"
elif [[ -n "$OPENAI_API_KEY" ]]; then
  echo "✓ OpenAI API key found"
  PROVIDER_FLAG=""  # OpenAI is default, no flag needed
else
  echo "✗ No API key found. Please set one of:"
  echo "  export OPENAI_API_KEY=sk-..."
  echo "  export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-..."
  echo "  export GEMINI_API_KEY=..."
  exit 1
fi
```

**Important:** Save the `PROVIDER_FLAG` value to use in translation commands.

### Step 4: Identify source file

```bash
# Find JSON files in common i18n/locale directories
````
END THIRD-PARTY FILE 35872eb633594b6d

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 35872eb633594b6d tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
