# jsonlines

Learn to stream JSON Lines with Vovk.ts: handlers yield data as it becomes available, and RPC clients consume it as an async iterable.

## What it does

The skill covers generator handlers using `function*` or `async function*`, per-item schemas through `iteration`, and manual stream control with `JSONLinesResponder`. Set `validateEachIteration` to check every yielded item; that adds work for each send. The examples use `vovk` and `zod`.

An RPC method returns an async iterable. Read items as they arrive, collect them with `asPromise()`, observe them with `onIterate()`, or stop the reader with `abortController`. `using` disposes of the stream when its scope ends. The skill also describes `progressive()` for streams containing different payload shapes; that API is experimental and may change. RPC client setup, procedure fundamentals, and WebSocket connections are outside its scope.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add finom/vovk --skill jsonlines -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/jsonlines/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/jsonlines/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add finom/vovk --skill jsonlines -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/jsonlines/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add finom/vovk --skill jsonlines -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/jsonlines/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install finom/vovk jsonlines
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/jsonlines/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add finom/vovk --skill jsonlines -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/finom/vovk --path skills/jsonlines
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/jsonlines/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add finom/vovk --skill jsonlines -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- stream generator results as they become available
- validate every JSON Lines item before sending
- control a stream manually with `JSONLinesResponder`
- read RPC items incrementally or collect the full result
- stop consuming a stream from the client

## Example prompts
- Show me how to stream messages from a Vovk.ts handler as JSON Lines.
- Add validation for every item yielded by this generator.
- Explain how to consume an RPC stream and stop it when a condition is met.

# Vovk.ts JSON Lines streaming

JSON Lines is Vovk's streaming model: server yields one JSON object per line, client consumes as async iterable. Works for chat completions, progress updates, long-running jobs, anything where data arrives over time.

Two authoring styles:

- **Generator handlers** — `function*` / `async function*` with `yield`. Common case.
- **`JSONLinesResponder`** — low-level manual `send` / `close` / `throw`. For orchestration, fan-in, or when stream shape doesn't fit a generator.

## Generator handler

Simplest streaming handler: `async function*` yielding objects. Each yield → one JSON line on wire.

```ts
import { post, procedure, operation } from 'vovk';
import { z } from 'zod';
export default class StreamController {
  @operation({ summary: 'Stream messages' })
  @post('completions')
  static getJSONLines = procedure({
    iteration: z.object({ message: z.string() }),
  }).handle(async function* () {
    yield { message: 'Hello,' };
    yield { message: ' World' };
  });
}
```

**`iteration`**: validation schema for each yielded object. Same role `output` plays for non-streaming procedures.

### Delegating to a service with `yield*`

Keep controller thin, let service do work:

```ts
static getJSONLines = procedure({
  iteration: z.object({ message: z.string() }),
}).handle(function* () {
  yield* StreamService.getJSONLines();
});
```

### Validation cadence

Default: **only first yielded item validated** — cheap, catches shape bugs early. Opt into every-iteration validation when shape varies:

```ts
procedure({
  iteration: z.union([
    z.strictObject({ users: z.array(UserSchema) }),
    z.strictObject({ tasks: z.array(TaskSchema) }),
  ]),
  validateEachIteration: true,
})
```

Use sparingly — every-item validation adds per-yield cost.
