# jsdoc-typescript-docs

A skill that writes JSDoc comments across a TypeScript codebase and builds docs from them with TypeDoc. Handy when functions have piled up without descriptions.

## What it does

The workflow runs in order: document functions with parameters, return values and examples, then interfaces, types and enums, then add purpose descriptions and code samples. A separate step covers TypeDoc output and wiring doc generation into CI.

The skill ships with worked examples for the awkward cases: a plain function, an async one with `@throws`, a generic with `@typeParam`, overloads marked `@internal`, interfaces using `@default` and `@see`, classes with `@remarks`. They show which tags to use and how to format examples inside code blocks.

It targets TypeScript, so plain JavaScript or an untyped project gets little out of it. TypeDoc is what turns the comments into generated documentation — if the project doesn't have it, that step is the one you skip.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill jsdoc-typescript-docs -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/jsdoc-typescript-docs/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/jsdoc-typescript-docs/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill jsdoc-typescript-docs -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/jsdoc-typescript-docs/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill jsdoc-typescript-docs -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/jsdoc-typescript-docs/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install patricio0312rev/skills jsdoc-typescript-docs
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/jsdoc-typescript-docs/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill jsdoc-typescript-docs -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/patricio0312rev/skills --path foundation/jsdoc-typescript-docs
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/jsdoc-typescript-docs/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill jsdoc-typescript-docs -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- add JSDoc comments to files that have none
- describe function parameters and return values
- put usage examples into comments
- generate HTML docs from comments with TypeDoc
- run doc generation in CI

## Example prompts
- document the functions in `src/api/client.ts` with JSDoc
- add JSDoc to the `User` interface with field examples
- set up TypeDoc and build the project docs

# JSDoc TypeScript Documentation

Create comprehensive inline documentation for TypeScript codebases.

## Core Workflow

1. **Document functions**: Parameters, returns, examples
2. **Document types**: Interfaces, types, enums
3. **Add descriptions**: Purpose and usage
4. **Include examples**: Code samples
5. **Generate docs**: TypeDoc output
6. **Integrate CI**: Automated doc generation

## Function Documentation

### Basic Function

```typescript
/**
 * Calculates the total price including tax.
 *
 * @param price - The base price before tax
 * @param taxRate - The tax rate as a decimal (e.g., 0.08 for 8%)
 * @returns The total price including tax
 *
 * @example
 * ```typescript
 * const total = calculateTotal(100, 0.08);
 * console.log(total); // 108
 * ```
 */
export function calculateTotal(price: number, taxRate: number): number {
  return price * (1 + taxRate);
}
```

### Async Function

```typescript
/**
 * Fetches user data from the API.
 *
 * @param userId - The unique identifier of the user
 * @param options - Optional configuration for the request
 * @returns A promise that resolves to the user data
 *
 * @throws {NotFoundError} When the user doesn't exist
 * @throws {NetworkError} When the request fails
 *
 * @example
 * ```typescript
 * try {
 *   const user = await fetchUser('user-123');
 *   console.log(user.name);
 * } catch (error) {
 *   if (error instanceof NotFoundError) {
 *     console.log('User not found');
 *   }
 * }
 * ```
 */
export async function fetchUser(
  userId: string,
  options?: FetchOptions
): Promise<User> {
  const response = await fetch(`/api/users/${userId}`, options);
  if (response.status === 404) {
    throw new NotFoundError(`User ${userId} not found`);
  }
  if (!response.ok) {
    throw new NetworkError('Failed to fetch user');
  }
  return response.json();
}
```

### Generic Function

```typescript
/**
 * Filters an array based on a predicate function.
 *
 * @typeParam T - The type of elements in the array
 * @param array - The array to filter
 * @param predicate - A function that returns true for elements to keep
 * @returns A new array containing only elements that pass the predicate
 *
 * @example
 * ```typescript
 * const numbers = [1, 2, 3, 4, 5];
 * const evens = filterArray(numbers, n => n % 2 === 0);
 * // evens: [2, 4]
 * ```
 */
export function filterArray<T>(
  array: T[],
  predicate: (item: T, index: number) => boolean
): T[] {
  return array.filter(predicate);
}
```

### Overloaded Function

```typescript
/**
 * Formats a value for display.
 *
 * @param value - The value to format
 * @returns The formatted string
 */
