## What it does

The skill puts 47 rules into the agent's context, sorted into 8 categories by priority. The top ones cover the module system and imports, plus language features. Below that come types and JSDoc, naming, error handling, functions, objects and arrays, and formatting. Every rule carries a prefix like `module-` or `naming-`, which makes it easy to point at one in a conversation.

The agent picks it up when you write new JavaScript or ES6+ code, sort out imports and exports, add JSDoc annotations, check naming, or refactor an existing file. Nothing fires on its own — the model reads the rules and follows them in its answers.

What ships is plain text rules. No scripts, no external dependencies. One `npx skills` command installs it. The skill is listed for Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode, so the same rule set can live in several editors at once.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill js-google -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/js-google/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/js-google/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill js-google -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/js-google/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill js-google -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/js-google/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install pproenca/dot-skills js-google
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/js-google/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill js-google -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/pproenca/dot-skills --path skills/.experimental/js-google
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/js-google/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pproenca/dot-skills --skill js-google -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- check imports and exports in a fresh ES6 module
- add JSDoc to exported functions
- rename classes and methods to one style
- remove circular dependencies between files
- bring scattered code under a single formatting style

## Example prompts
- check this file against the js-google rules and list the violations
- refactor this module to the Google style from the js-google skill
- add JSDoc to the exports the way js-google requires

# Google JavaScript Best Practices

Comprehensive JavaScript style and best practices guide based on Google's official JavaScript Style Guide, designed for AI agents and LLMs. Contains 47 rules across 8 categories, prioritized by impact to guide automated refactoring and code generation.

## When to Apply

Reference these guidelines when:
- Writing new JavaScript or ES6+ code
- Structuring modules and managing imports/exports
- Adding JSDoc type annotations and documentation
- Reviewing code for naming and style consistency
- Refactoring existing JavaScript code

## Rule Categories by Priority

| Priority | Category | Impact | Prefix |
|----------|----------|--------|--------|
| 1 | Module System & Imports | CRITICAL | `module-` |
| 2 | Language Features | CRITICAL | `lang-` |
| 3 | Type Safety & JSDoc | HIGH | `type-` |
| 4 | Naming Conventions | HIGH | `naming-` |
| 5 | Control Flow & Error Handling | MEDIUM-HIGH | `control-` |
| 6 | Functions & Parameters | MEDIUM | `func-` |
| 7 | Objects & Arrays | MEDIUM | `data-` |
| 8 | Formatting & Style | LOW | `format-` |

## Quick Reference

### 1. Module System & Imports (CRITICAL)

- [`module-avoid-circular-dependencies`](references/module-avoid-circular-dependencies.md) - Prevent loading failures from circular imports
- [`module-file-extension-in-imports`](references/module-file-extension-in-imports.md) - Include .js extension in import paths
- [`module-named-exports-over-default`](references/module-named-exports-over-default.md) - Prefer named exports for consistency
- [`module-no-duplicate-imports`](references/module-no-duplicate-imports.md) - Import from same file only once
- [`module-no-import-aliasing`](references/module-no-import-aliasing.md) - Keep original export names
- [`module-source-file-structure`](references/module-source-file-structure.md) - Follow standard file structure order

### 2. Language Features (CRITICAL)

- [`lang-const-over-let-over-var`](references/lang-const-over-let-over-var.md) - Use const by default, never var
- [`lang-es6-classes-over-prototypes`](references/lang-es6-classes-over-prototypes.md) - Use class syntax over prototype manipulation
- [`lang-explicit-semicolons`](references/lang-explicit-semicolons.md) - Always use explicit semicolons
- [`lang-no-eval`](references/lang-no-eval.md) - Never use eval or Function constructor
- [`lang-no-modify-builtins`](references/lang-no-modify-builtins.md) - Never modify built-in prototypes
- [`lang-no-non-standard-features`](references/lang-no-non-standard-features.md) - Use only standard ECMAScript features
