## What it does

The skill picks the right Stripe API for the job and writes working integration code. It covers one-time payments with Checkout Sessions, an embedded form via Payment Element and Payment Intents, subscriptions, Setup Intents for saving a card, Stripe Connect for marketplaces, and the Customer Portal where customers manage their own billing. Its advice is to start with Checkout Sessions — the fastest route to accepting money — and add an embedded form later.

You need keys from the Stripe dashboard first: test keys begin with `sk_test_` and `pk_test_`, live keys with `sk_live_` and `pk_live_`. Secrets go in different places depending on the host: on Cloudflare Workers use `npx wrangler secret put STRIPE_SECRET_KEY`, locally keep them in `.dev.vars`. Packages come from `npm install stripe @stripe/stripe-js`. No MCP server is involved.

Webhooks need signature verification, and Cloudflare Workers has a trap here. The synchronous `constructEvent` relies on Node.js `crypto`, which Workers does not have. Use `constructEventAsync` instead, since it goes through the Web Crypto API. Skipping verification means your handler will accept forged events.

## Requirements
- Works with: Stripe

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill stripe-payments -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/stripe-payments/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/stripe-payments/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill stripe-payments -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/stripe-payments/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill stripe-payments -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/stripe-payments/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jezweb/claude-skills stripe-payments
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/stripe-payments/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill stripe-payments -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jezweb/claude-skills --path plugins/integrations/skills/stripe-payments
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/stripe-payments/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill stripe-payments -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jezweb/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/integrations/skills/stripe-payments/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- take a one-time payment without building a checkout form
- set up recurring monthly billing
- verify a Stripe webhook signature
- let customers cancel or switch plans themselves
- decide between Checkout Sessions and Payment Intents

## Example prompts
- add Stripe payments to this app, start with Checkout Sessions
- write a webhook handler at `/api/webhooks/stripe` with signature verification
- I need a monthly subscription and a customer portal for billing

# Stripe Payments

Add Stripe payments to a web app. Covers the common patterns — one-time payments, subscriptions, webhooks, customer portal — with working code. No MCP server needed.

## Which Stripe API Do I Need?

| You want to... | Use | Complexity |
|----------------|-----|-----------|
| Accept a one-time payment | Checkout Sessions | Low — Stripe hosts the payment page |
| Embed a payment form in your UI | Payment Element + Payment Intents | Medium — you build the form, Stripe handles the card |
| Recurring billing / subscriptions | Checkout Sessions (subscription mode) | Low-Medium |
| Save a card for later | Setup Intents | Low |
| Marketplace / platform payments | Stripe Connect | High |
| Let customers manage billing | Customer Portal | Low — Stripe hosts it |

**Default recommendation**: Start with Checkout Sessions. It's the fastest path to accepting money. You can always add embedded forms later.

## Setup

### Install

```bash
npm install stripe @stripe/stripe-js
```

### API Keys

```bash
# Get keys from: https://dashboard.stripe.com/apikeys
# Test keys start with sk_test_ and pk_test_
# Live keys start with sk_live_ and pk_live_
# For Cloudflare Workers — store as secrets:
npx wrangler secret put STRIPE_SECRET_KEY
npx wrangler secret put STRIPE_WEBHOOK_SECRET
# For local dev — .dev.vars:
STRIPE_SECRET_KEY=sk_test_...
STRIPE_WEBHOOK_SECRET=whsec_...
STRIPE_PUBLISHABLE_KEY=pk_test_...
```

### Server-Side Client

```typescript
import Stripe from 'stripe';
// Cloudflare Workers
const stripe = new Stripe(c.env.STRIPE_SECRET_KEY);
// Node.js
const stripe = new Stripe(process.env.STRIPE_SECRET_KEY!);
```

## One-Time Payment (Checkout Sessions)

The fastest way to accept payment. Stripe hosts the entire checkout page.

### Create a Checkout Session (Server)

```typescript
app.post('/api/checkout', async (c) => {
