## What it does

The skill edits reserved memory in boot order: MB1 BCT, MB2 BCT, kernel reserved-memory and SWIOTLB. It covers two scenarios, `headless` and `no-camera`, each with a carveout table per chip — T234 (Orin) or T264 (Thor).

Inside are DTS recipes: zeroing `aux_info@<CARVEOUT_NAME>` in MB1 BCT, disabling `auxp_controls@<index>` and deleting `auxp_ast_config@<idx>` in MB2 BCT, setting `status = "disabled"` on `display@<addr>` or `vi*`/`isp*`/`nvcsi` nodes in the kernel DTS. For SWIOTLB it edits `CMDLINE_ADD` in `<module>.conf.common`. After every patch the skill has you recompile and decompile the BCT with the same flags used in `tegraflash_impl_t<chip>.py`, then check the merged binary.

You need an active target profile, an extracted BSP and an initialized source tree. The skill refuses to disable any carveout, cluster or node outside its scenario table. The GPU stack must match the chip: T234 uses nvgpu, T264 and later use OpenRM. SWIOTLB must not be set to zero, because some peripherals cannot use the IOMMU. This is not CPU or GPU frequency tuning.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill jetson-optimize-memory -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/jetson-optimize-memory/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/jetson-optimize-memory/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill jetson-optimize-memory -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/jetson-optimize-memory/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill jetson-optimize-memory -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/jetson-optimize-memory/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install NVIDIA/skills jetson-optimize-memory
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/jetson-optimize-memory/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill jetson-optimize-memory -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills --path skills/jetson-optimize-memory
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/jetson-optimize-memory/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill jetson-optimize-memory -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/jetson-optimize-memory/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- reclaim DRAM on a headless Jetson deployment
- zero DCE carveouts in MB1 and MB2 BCT
- disable VI, ISP and NVCSI nodes in the kernel DTS
- shrink the SWIOTLB pool via CMDLINE_ADD
- verify the merged BCT after patching

## Example prompts
- Free memory on this Jetson for a headless setup: disable the DCE carveouts and the display node
- Run the no-camera recipe for T234: RCE, VI and ISP
- Recompile and decompile MB1 BCT after the patch and show me the merged output

# jetson-optimize-memory

Memory is reserved across four layers ordered by boot chronology
(higher row = earlier in boot, closer to hardware):

| Layer | Content | Key files |
|---|---|---|
| MB1 BCT | firmware carveouts | per-module misc DTS |
| MB2 BCT | firmware loading + AST controls | per-module misc DTS |
| Kernel DTS | reserved-memory and driver binding | per-module DTS |
| SWIOTLB | DMA bounce pool size | `<module>.conf.common` (`CMDLINE_ADD`) |

**Critical rules:**

- Only the scenarios in **Scenario recipes** are validated. Refuse any
  request to disable a carveout/cluster/node not in that table.
- **Zeroing a carveout requires both: disabling the cluster's loading
  controls AND removing the AST that references it.**
- **Emit explicit overrides for every cluster in the recipe**, regardless
  of how the source `#ifdef`/`#else` looks. Verify the merged binary.
- **GPU SW stack must match the chip**: T234 -> nvgpu, T264 and later
  -> OpenRM. Follow the shared derived-platform rule in
  `target-platform-contract.md`; stop on mismatches instead of guessing.
- Do not set SWIOTLB to 0 — some peripherals can't use the IOMMU.

## Scenario recipes

| Keyword | MB1 BCT carveouts | MB2 BCT | Kernel DTS |
|---|---|---|---|
| `headless` | DCE-family (see chip table) | DCE `auxp_controls` + DCE AST(s) | `display@<addr>` (and `dce@<addr>` if exposed) → disabled |
| `no-camera` | RCE/VI/ISP-family | RCE `auxp_controls` (each instance) + RCE AST(s) | recommended: VI/ISP/NVCSI → disabled |

### Chip-specific carveouts

| Scenario | T234 (Orin) | T264 (Thor) |
|---|---|---|
| `headless` | `CARVEOUT_BPMP_DCE`, `CARVEOUT_DCE`, `CARVEOUT_DCE_TSEC`, `CARVEOUT_TSEC_DCE`, `CARVEOUT_DISP_EARLY_BOOT_FB` | `CARVEOUT_DCE`, `CARVEOUT_TSEC_DCE`, `CARVEOUT_HPSE_DCE`, `CARVEOUT_DISP_EARLY_BOOT_FB` |
| `no-camera` | `CARVEOUT_RCE`, `CARVEOUT_CAMERA_TASKLIST` | `CARVEOUT_RCE`, `CARVEOUT_RCE1`, `CARVEOUT_RCE_RW`, `CARVEOUT_VI_TASKLIST`, `CARVEOUT_VI1_TASKLIST`, `CARVEOUT_ISP_TASKLIST`, `CARVEOUT_ISP1_TASKLIST` |

> **Post-boot:** `headless` → `sudo systemctl set-default multi-user.target`.
