# java-migration

Walks a project through Java LTS upgrades: assess the codebase, fix the build, compile, test. Useful when legacy code has to reach Java 21 or 25.

## What it does

The skill breaks the upgrade into steps. First it checks the current Java version and greps for removed APIs, then you update the Maven or Gradle config, compile, and fix errors one by one before running tests. A reference table lists what breaks on each hop: 8 → 11, 11 → 17, 17 → 21, 21 → 25.

Replacements for cut packages are included. For `javax.xml.bind` it points to `jakarta.xml.bind-api` plus `jaxb-runtime`; for `sun.misc.Base64` it says to move to `java.util.Base64`. Reflection into JDK internals gets `--add-opens` flags, with a `maven-surefire-plugin` example. New language features worth adopting along the way are listed too: `var`, records, sealed classes, text blocks, switch expressions, virtual threads.

The catch: you cannot skip LTS releases. The skill only follows LTS → LTS. If the project still leans on `sun.*` or the old JAXB, the build will not come together until those are swapped out, so check the dependency tree before you start.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill java-migration -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/java-migration/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/java-migration/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill java-migration -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/java-migration/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill java-migration -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/java-migration/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install decebals/claude-code-java java-migration
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/java-migration/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill java-migration -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/decebals/claude-code-java --path skills/java-migration
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/java-migration/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill java-migration -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/decebals/claude-code-java/tree/HEAD/skills/java-migration/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find which removed APIs the codebase still calls
- rewrite Maven or Gradle config for the new Java version
- swap out cut packages such as `javax.xml.bind`
- add `--add-opens` flags for reflection into JDK internals
- work through compilation errors after the version bump

## Example prompts
- check this project and tell me what breaks going from Java 8 to Java 11
- update `pom.xml` for Java 21 and list the dependencies I need
- run `mvn clean compile` and explain the errors after the migration

# Java Migration Skill

Step-by-step guide for upgrading Java projects between major versions.

## When to Use
- User says "upgrade to Java 25" / "migrate from Java 8" / "update Java version"
- Modernizing legacy projects
- Spring Boot 2.x → 3.x → 4.x migration
- Preparing for LTS version adoption

## Migration Paths

```
Java 8 (LTS) → Java 11 (LTS) → Java 17 (LTS) → Java 21 (LTS) → Java 25 (LTS)
     │              │               │              │               │
     └──────────────┴───────────────┴──────────────┴───────────────┘
                         Always migrate LTS → LTS
```

---

## Quick Reference: What Breaks

| From → To | Major Breaking Changes |
|-----------|------------------------|
| 8 → 11 | Removed `javax.xml.bind`, module system, internal APIs |
| 11 → 17 | Sealed classes (preview→final), strong encapsulation |
| 17 → 21 | Pattern matching changes, `finalize()` deprecated for removal |
| 21 → 25 | Security Manager removed, Unsafe methods removed, 32-bit dropped |

---

## Migration Workflow

### Step 1: Assess Current State

```bash
# Check current Java version
java -version
# Check compiler target in Maven
grep -r "maven.compiler" pom.xml
# Find usage of removed APIs
grep -r "sun\." --include="*.java" src/
grep -r "javax\.xml\.bind" --include="*.java" src/
```

### Step 2: Update Build Configuration

**Maven:**
```xml
<properties>
    <java.version>21</java.version>
    <maven.compiler.source>${java.version}</maven.compiler.source>
    <maven.compiler.target>${java.version}</maven.compiler.target>
</properties>
<!-- Or with compiler plugin -->
<plugin>
    <groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId>
    <artifactId>maven-compiler-plugin</artifactId>
    <version>3.12.1</version>
    <configuration>
        <release>21</release>
    </configuration>
</plugin>
```

**Gradle:**
```groovy
java {
    toolchain {
        languageVersion = JavaLanguageVersion.of(21)
    }
}
```

### Step 3: Fix Compilation Errors

Run compile and fix errors iteratively:
```bash
mvn clean compile 2>&1 | head -50
```

### Step 4: Run Tests

```bash
mvn test
```

### Step 5: Check Runtime Warnings

```bash
# Run with illegal-access warnings
java --illegal-access=warn -jar app.jar
```

---
