# java-code-review

A skill that walks Java code through a checklist: null safety, exceptions, concurrency, resource leaks. Handy before you merge a PR.

## What it does

The skill fixes the order of work for the agent: a quick scan, a pass over each category, then a summary of findings sorted by severity. Seven categories are covered — null safety, exception handling, collections and streams, concurrency, Java idioms, resource management and API design.

The report has a set shape: Critical, Improvements, Minor/Style, plus a Good Practices Observed block. Every item carries a line reference and a suggested fix. The author calls that last block important for morale, so it is not filler.

Checks are concrete. The skill flags `Optional.get()` without an `isPresent()` guard, empty catch blocks, lost stack traces, collections modified during iteration, a plain `HashMap` used as shared state, and `equals` without `hashCode`. The source text is cut off, so the full set of API design rules is not visible there.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill java-code-review -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/java-code-review/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/java-code-review/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill java-code-review -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/java-code-review/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill java-code-review -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/java-code-review/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install decebals/claude-code-java java-code-review
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/java-code-review/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill java-code-review -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/decebals/claude-code-java --path skills/java-code-review
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/java-code-review/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill java-code-review -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/decebals/claude-code-java/tree/HEAD/skills/java-code-review/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- spot NPE risk in a chained call
- catch empty catch blocks and lost stack traces
- check shared mutable state for thread safety
- close resource leaks with try-with-resources
- sort PR comments by severity

## Example prompts
- review this PR with the java-code-review checklist
- check `UserService.java` for null safety and concurrency issues
- run java-code-review on my changes before I merge

# Java Code Review Skill

Systematic code review checklist for Java projects.

## When to Use
- User says "review this code" / "check this PR" / "code review"
- Before merging a PR
- After implementing a feature

## Review Strategy

1. **Quick scan** - Understand intent, identify scope
2. **Checklist pass** - Go through each category below
3. **Summary** - List findings by severity (Critical → Minor)

## Output Format

```markdown
## Code Review: [file/feature name]
### Critical
- [Issue description + line reference + suggestion]
### Improvements
- [Suggestion + rationale]
### Minor/Style
- [Nitpicks, optional improvements]
### Good Practices Observed
- [Positive feedback - important for morale]
```

## Review Checklist

### 1. Null Safety

**Check for:**
```java
// ❌ NPE risk
String name = user.getName().toUpperCase();
// ✅ Safe
String name = Optional.ofNullable(user.getName())
    .map(String::toUpperCase)
    .orElse("");
// ✅ Also safe (early return)
if (user.getName() == null) {
    return "";
}
return user.getName().toUpperCase();
```

**Flags:**
- Chained method calls without null checks
- Missing `@Nullable` / `@NonNull` annotations on public APIs
- `Optional.get()` without `isPresent()` check
- Returning `null` from methods that could return `Optional` or empty collection

**Suggest:**
- Use `Optional` for return types that may be absent
- Use `Objects.requireNonNull()` for constructor/method params
- Return empty collections instead of null: `Collections.emptyList()`

### 2. Exception Handling

**Check for:**
```java
// ❌ Swallowing exceptions
try {
    process();
} catch (Exception e) {
    // silently ignored
}
// ❌ Catching too broad
catch (Exception e) { }
catch (Throwable t) { }
// ❌ Losing stack trace
catch (IOException e) {
    throw new RuntimeException(e.getMessage());
}
// ✅ Proper handling
catch (IOException e) {
    log.error("Failed to process file: {}", filename, e);
    throw new ProcessingException("File processing failed", e);
}
```

**Flags:**
- Empty catch blocks
- Catching `Exception` or `Throwable` broadly
- Losing original exception (not chaining)
- Using exceptions for flow control
- Checked exceptions leaking through API boundaries

**Suggest:**
- Log with context AND stack trace
- Use specific exception types
- Chain exceptions with `cause`
- Consider custom exceptions for domain errors

### 3. Collections & Streams

**Check for:**
```java
// ❌ Modifying while iterating
for (Item item : items) {
    if (item.isExpired()) {
        items.remove(item);  // ConcurrentModificationException
    }
}
// ✅ Use removeIf
items.removeIf(Item::isExpired);
