## What it does

This skill evaluates law student essays written in IRAC format (Issue, Rule, Application, Conclusion). It checks whether you identified all issues in the hypothetical, stated legal rules correctly, applied those rules to specific facts rather than just restating both, and organized the answer clearly. You paste your essay or point at a draft file; the skill outputs structured feedback: issues spotted and missed, rule accuracy (flagged with `[VERIFY]` when the skill is uncertain), whether your analysis actually connects facts to rule elements, organization quality, a grade band, and the top three fixes ranked by impact.

The skill does not rewrite your essay or give you a model answer—the point is that you rewrite it yourself. It appends each session to a tracker file and surfaces recurring patterns after three or more sessions. If your question sounds like a real legal situation (real names, deadlines, dollar amounts), it stops and reminds you that you need an actual lawyer, not study materials. AI-generated case citations in feedback must be verified on Westlaw or CourtListener before use.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill irac-practice -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/irac-practice/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/irac-practice/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill irac-practice -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/irac-practice/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill irac-practice -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/irac-practice/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install anthropics/claude-for-legal irac-practice
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/irac-practice/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill irac-practice -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/anthropics/claude-for-legal --path law-student/skills/irac-practice
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/irac-practice/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill irac-practice -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- Check whether all legal issues in the hypothetical were spotted
- Evaluate accuracy of rule statements in the essay
- Identify whether the student applied rules to facts or just restated both
- Track recurring IRAC structure mistakes across multiple sessions
- Distinguish practice hypotheticals from real legal situations

## Example prompts
- Grade my IRAC essay: [paste text]
- I wrote an answer to the contracts hypo, check my structure: `~/law/contracts-draft.md`
- Generate a torts hypothetical and grade my answer

1. Load `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/law-student/CLAUDE.md` → classes, exam formats, outline locations, learning style.
2. Apply the framework below.
3. Establish mode: student-provided hypo + answer, OR skill-generated hypo with student's answer.
4. Read the answer closely. Map against expected IRAC components.
5. Output structured feedback: issues spotted/missed, rule accuracy, analysis depth, organization, grade band, top 3 fixes, at most 1-2 labeled example phrasings (never a full IRAC model).
6. Append to `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/law-student/irac-sessions/[student]/tracker.md` for pattern detection. Surface patterns after 3+ sessions.

## Real-matter check

If the question the student is asking sounds like it's about a REAL situation — their lease, their parking ticket, their family's business, their friend's arrest, a real dollar amount, a real deadline, a real party name — stop.

> "This sounds like a real situation, not a hypothetical. I can't give you legal advice, and you can't give it either — you're not a lawyer yet. If this is real, [the person] needs an actual lawyer: legal aid, your school's clinic, a lawyer referral service (your jurisdiction's bar association, law society, or legal aid body), or (if there's money) a private attorney. I'm happy to help you understand the general legal concepts involved, but that's study, not advice."

Watch for: real names, real addresses, real dates, specific dollar amounts, "my landlord/boss/parent/friend," "I got a ticket/letter/notice," deadlines measured in days. Any one of these is a trigger.

## Purpose

1L writing is mostly IRAC. 2L-3L writing that touches legal analysis is IRAC under the hood. The exam rewards structure as much as content. This skill grades *structure* — did you spot the issues, did you state the rules correctly, did you apply rules to facts or just restate both?

**Does not rewrite the essay.** Ever. The whole point is that you learn by writing, getting specific structural feedback, and rewriting yourself.

## Confidence discipline
