# ios-device-automation

This skill controls an iPhone or iPad through Midscene CLI, reading screenshots to decide the next tap. Useful when you need to check an app on a real device.

## What it does

The skill hands the agent a set of `npx -y @midscene/ios@1` commands: `connect`, `take_screenshot`, `act`, `assert` and `runwdarequest`. Everything runs off screenshots, so no DOM and no accessibility labels are needed — if an element is visible, it can be touched. A single `act` call covers tapping, typing, scrolling, dragging, two-finger zoom and system navigation like Home or the app switcher.

Device control goes through WebDriverAgent. When WDA is already running and the session was created outside Midscene, pass `--wda-host`, `--wda-port` and `--session-id`, then repeat those options on later commands. Do not run these commands in the background or chain several at once: the screenshot-analyze-act loop depends on reading each result first. One command takes roughly a minute, and a complex `act` can take longer, so a CI job with a tight per-step timeout is a bad fit.

Before the first run you need `MIDSCENE_MODEL_API_KEY`, `MIDSCENE_MODEL_NAME`, `MIDSCENE_MODEL_BASE_URL` and `MIDSCENE_MODEL_FAMILY` as environment variables or in a `.env` file in the working directory. The model has to be good at visual grounding. The examples use Gemini-3-Flash, Qwen 3.5, Doubao Seed 2.0 Lite, Zhipu GLM-4.6V and Gemini-3-Pro.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add web-infra-dev/midscene-skills --skill ios-device-automation -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add web-infra-dev/midscene-skills --skill ios-automation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ios-automation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ios-automation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add web-infra-dev/midscene-skills --skill ios-automation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ios-automation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add web-infra-dev/midscene-skills --skill ios-automation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ios-automation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install web-infra-dev/midscene-skills ios-automation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ios-automation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add web-infra-dev/midscene-skills --skill ios-automation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/web-infra-dev/midscene-skills --path skills/ios-automation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ios-automation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add web-infra-dev/midscene-skills --skill ios-automation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/web-infra-dev/midscene-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ios-automation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- walk a purchase flow on an iPhone and confirm the confirmation screen appears
- read the connected Wi-Fi network name from Settings without tapping by hand
- check a screen layout on an iPad where there is no DOM to query
- grab a screenshot of the current app state and reason about it
- run a QA check on a screen and fail with a readable message when the condition does not hold

## Example prompts
- connect to the iPhone, open Settings, go to Wi-Fi and tell me which network it is on
- type hello world in the search field and press Enter
- assert that a login button is visible on screen

# iOS Device Automation

> **CRITICAL RULES — VIOLATIONS WILL BREAK THE WORKFLOW:**
>
> 1. **Never run midscene commands in the background.** Each command must run synchronously so you can read its output (especially screenshots) before deciding the next action. Background execution breaks the screenshot-analyze-act loop.
> 2. **Run only one midscene command at a time.** Wait for the previous command to finish, read the screenshot, then decide the next action. Never chain multiple commands together.
> 3. **Allow enough time for each command to complete.** Midscene commands involve AI inference and screen interaction, which can take longer than typical shell commands. A typical command needs about 1 minute; complex `act` commands may need even longer.
> 4. **Always report task results before finishing.** After completing the automation task, you MUST proactively summarize the results to the user — including key data found, actions completed, screenshots taken, and any relevant findings. Never silently end after the last automation step; the user expects a complete response in a single interaction.

Automate iOS devices using `npx -y @midscene/ios@1`. Each CLI command maps directly to an MCP tool — you (the AI agent) act as the brain, deciding which actions to take based on screenshots.
