## What it does

The skill covers how Ionic Framework is put together: 80+ web components prefixed with `ion-`, the `ios` and `md` platform modes, Capacitor integration, and support for Angular, React and Vue. Inside you get a component overview by category (layout, navigation, forms), Ionic CLI commands, and markup examples. Your agent stops guessing at `ion-input` syntax or `ionic serve` flags.

Two hosted MCP servers ship with it: Capawesome and Ionic Framework. Both expose `search_docs` and `get_doc_page`, so the agent can check current docs before answering. If the MCP tools aren't available, the skill keeps going on its bundled text. No account or token is needed for the documentation.

The skill requires Node.js, npm and the Ionic CLI. Worth installing if your project already runs on Ionic, or if you're still weighing Angular against React and Vue for a mobile app — the reference saves you hunting for the right component.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add capawesome-team/skills --skill ionic-expert -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ionic-expert/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ionic-expert/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add capawesome-team/skills --skill ionic-expert -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ionic-expert/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add capawesome-team/skills --skill ionic-expert -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ionic-expert/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install capawesome-team/skills ionic-expert
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ionic-expert/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add capawesome-team/skills --skill ionic-expert -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/capawesome-team/skills --path skills/ionic-expert
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ionic-expert/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add capawesome-team/skills --skill ionic-expert -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/capawesome-team/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ionic-expert/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find the right `ion-` component for a screen
- build a page layout with `ion-header` and `ion-content`
- choose between `--type=angular` and `--type=angular-standalone` when scaffolding
- tell when `ionInput` fires versus `ionChange`
- wire up an MCP server for Ionic docs

## Example prompts
- show me how to build a form with `ion-input` and `ion-select`
- which Ionic components handle tab navigation?
- scaffold a new Ionic project with the `tabs` template on Vue

# Ionic Expert

Comprehensive reference for Ionic Framework development — core concepts, components, theming, lifecycle, navigation, framework-specific patterns (Angular, React, Vue), upgrading, and Capawesome Cloud integration.

## MCP Servers

Two hosted MCP servers serve the current documentation, so both are always ahead of the guidance bundled with this skill:

- **[Capawesome MCP server](https://capawesome.io/docs/ai/mcp/capawesome/)** — the Capawesome plugins, the Capawesome CLI, and Capawesome Cloud.
- **[Ionic Framework MCP server](https://capawesome.io/docs/ai/mcp/ionic-framework/)** (unofficial) — the Ionic Framework UI components, their API reference, and the official usage examples per framework.

Both expose `search_docs` and `get_doc_page`, so pick the server by topic before calling either.

- **If the MCP tools are available**, call `search_docs` on the server that owns the topic and read the matching page with `get_doc_page` before applying the guidance below. Where the two disagree, follow the documentation.
- **If they are not available**, mention once that the servers can be added with the commands below, then continue with this skill. Never block on it.

```bash
claude mcp add --transport http capawesome "https://mcp.capawesome.io/mcp"
claude mcp add --transport http ionic-framework "https://ionic-framework-mcp.capawesome.io/mcp"
```

Neither server needs an account or a token for documentation. See the `capawesome-mcp` and `ionic-framework-mcp` skills for full setup, including the Capawesome Cloud tools.

## Core Concepts

Ionic Framework is a UI toolkit for building cross-platform apps with web technologies. It provides 80+ pre-built UI components as Web Components prefixed with `ion-` (e.g., `<ion-button>`, `<ion-content>`).

- **Platform modes**: Components adapt styling to the platform. iOS devices use `ios` mode; Android and all other platforms use `md` (Material Design). The `<html>` element receives a class (`ios` or `md`).
- **Capacitor integration**: Ionic handles the UI; Capacitor handles native device APIs. See the `capacitor-app-development` skill for Capacitor guidance.
- **Framework support**: Ionic integrates with Angular (`@ionic/angular`), React (`@ionic/react`), and Vue (`@ionic/vue`).
