## What it does

This skill gathers the baseline for a single PostHog error: status, description, first and last occurrence, counts for occurrences, users and sessions, the top in-app frame, release details, and a volume trend. It then fetches sampled `$exception` events with stack information, URLs, browsers, and event properties.

It uses SQL queries for focused breakdowns by app version, release, browser, OS, geography, feature flag, time, or current URL. The workflow can also inspect linked session recordings, OTEL logs, and the data schema. Web, server, Node, Java, and Python projects do not automatically capture `$app_version`, so that value must be supplied separately when app-version analysis is needed.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill investigating-error-issue -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/investigating-error-issue/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/investigating-error-issue/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill investigating-error-issue -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/investigating-error-issue/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill investigating-error-issue -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/investigating-error-issue/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PostHog/skills investigating-error-issue
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/investigating-error-issue/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill investigating-error-issue -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PostHog/skills --path skills/omnibus/investigating-error-issue
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/investigating-error-issue/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PostHog/skills --skill investigating-error-issue -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- inspect one PostHog error by ID
- compare recent and earliest exception samples
- trace a failure to a release or app version
- check whether browser, OS, or feature flags affect the error
- connect the issue with logs and session recordings

## Example prompts
- Investigate PostHog error `<issue_id>` and report who it affects, when it started, and whether it matches a release.
- Open the issue at `/error-tracking/<id>` and compare a recent event with the earliest one.
- Break down this error by browser and feature flag, then give me a working cause hypothesis.

  Investigates a single PostHog error tracking issue end-to-end. Use when

# Investigating an error tracking issue

When a user asks "what's going on with this error?" or pastes an issue URL, gather
the context they would otherwise have to assemble manually: who is hitting it, what
changed, where it happens, and whether a replay shows the cause.

## Workflow

### Step 1 — Establish the issue baseline

Fetch the issue record with its compact aggregates and a sparkline:

```json
posthog:query-error-tracking-issue
{
  "issueId": "<issue_id>",
  "dateRange": { "date_from": "-30d" },
  "includeSparkline": true,
  "volumeResolution": 12
}
```

Capture: `name`, `description`, `status`, `first_seen`, `last_seen`, `assignee`,
total `occurrences` / `users` / `sessions`, top in-app frame, latest release
metadata, and the volume buckets.

The sparkline tells you the shape — flat, spike, ramp, or recurring — and that
shape drives the rest of the investigation. If the user only asked a status
question, skip `includeSparkline` to save tokens.

### Step 2 — Pull a sample exception event

A captured event has the stack frames, URL, browser, and properties needed to
