## What it does

The skill hands your agent a map of the GitHub Copilot SDK, a public preview that exposes the Copilot CLI agent runtime over JSON-RPC. The shape is always the same: your app talks to an SDK client, the client speaks JSON-RPC to the CLI. Inside the skill you get pointers to the official docs index and the per-language READMEs for Node.js/TypeScript, Python, Go, .NET and Java, so the agent stops guessing at shared behavior.

Auth and permissions get their own section. The permission model is deny-by-default, so create and resume flows need an explicit handler: `approveAll` in TypeScript, `PermissionHandler.approve_all` in Python, `PermissionHandler.ApproveAll` in Go and .NET, `PermissionHandler.APPROVE_ALL` in Java. Cleanup goes through `disconnect()`; `destroy()` is deprecated. Pass your own `sessionId` at creation if you want resume to work, and supply the BYOK provider config again on resume — keys are not persisted.

Normal use needs a GitHub Copilot subscription. BYOK does not. Node.js, Python and .NET bundle the Copilot CLI, Go can use an installed CLI or embed one via the `go tool bundler` workflow, and Java expects the CLI installed separately. Default transport is stdio with an SDK-managed CLI process; point `cliUrl` at an external headless server when you run one. Skip hardcoded model lists — `client.listModels()` is right there.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add intellectronica/agent-skills --skill copilot-sdk -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/copilot-sdk/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/copilot-sdk/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add intellectronica/agent-skills --skill copilot-sdk -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/copilot-sdk/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add intellectronica/agent-skills --skill copilot-sdk -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/copilot-sdk/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install intellectronica/agent-skills copilot-sdk
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/copilot-sdk/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add intellectronica/agent-skills --skill copilot-sdk -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/intellectronica/agent-skills --path skills/copilot-sdk
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/copilot-sdk/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add intellectronica/agent-skills --skill copilot-sdk -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/intellectronica/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/copilot-sdk/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- start an SDK client and open a session with a permission handler
- debug why a session will not resume after a restart
- connect to an external headless Copilot CLI server via `cliUrl`
- set up BYOK with short-lived Azure tokens instead of static keys
- pick between local, bundled and backend CLI setups

## Example prompts
- set up the GitHub Copilot SDK in Python: client, session, permission handler
- why does my BYOK config disappear when I resume a session, and how do I fix it
- show me how to connect to a headless Copilot CLI through `cliUrl`

# GitHub Copilot SDK

## Overview

The GitHub Copilot SDK exposes the same Copilot CLI agent runtime over JSON-RPC, so apps can drive Copilot programmatically instead of building their own orchestration layer.

**Status:** Public preview
**SDKs:** Node.js/TypeScript, Python, Go, .NET, Java
**Architecture:** Application -> SDK client -> JSON-RPC -> Copilot CLI

## How to use this skill

When helping with the Copilot SDK:

1. Prefer the official docs index and the language-specific README over memory.
2. Treat the top-level SDK README plus `docs/` as the source of truth for shared behavior.
3. Call out preview status when stability or breaking changes matter.
4. Avoid hardcoding model lists when runtime discovery via `listModels()` is available.
5. Watch for stale guidance around permissions, lifecycle methods, and event names.
