## What it does

The skill guides an agent through microarchitecture profiling. It points to the right collection type: `vtune -collect hotspots` to find where time goes, `microarchitecture-exploration` for IPC and pipeline stalls, `memory-access` for cache misses and DRAM bandwidth. On AMD CPUs there is a free path through `AMDuProfCLI collect --config assess` and `--config memory`.

Inside is a metrics table with rough targets: IPC above 2.0, Retiring above 70%, Bad Speculation under 5%. The top-down breakdown covers Front-End Bound, Back-End Bound and Memory Bound across L1, L2, L3 and DRAM. A separate section handles the roofline model, comparing achieved performance against hardware peaks, with `likwid-perfctr` for manual FLOPS and bandwidth collection.

Build with debug info or the report is hard to read. `gcc -O2 -g` keeps symbols visible; without it VTune shows addresses instead of function names and there is little to work with. VTune Profiler itself is installed separately — the skill does not install it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill intel-vtune-amd-uprof -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/intel-vtune-amd-uprof/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/intel-vtune-amd-uprof/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill intel-vtune-amd-uprof -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/intel-vtune-amd-uprof/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill intel-vtune-amd-uprof -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/intel-vtune-amd-uprof/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills intel-vtune-amd-uprof
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/intel-vtune-amd-uprof/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill intel-vtune-amd-uprof -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --path skills/profilers/intel-vtune-amd-uprof
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/intel-vtune-amd-uprof/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill intel-vtune-amd-uprof -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- find the function eating most of the runtime
- explain why code is slow despite good cache hit rates
- measure IPC and cycles spent waiting on memory
- compare achieved FLOPS against the CPU peak with a roofline
- break down L1–L3 misses and DRAM bandwidth limits

## Example prompts
- profile my program with VTune and show the hot functions
- my cache hit rate looks fine but the code is still slow
- run microarchitecture-exploration and explain the pipeline stalls

# Intel VTune & AMD uProf

## Purpose

Guide agents through CPU microarchitecture profiling with Intel VTune Profiler (free Community Edition) and AMD uProf: hotspot identification, microarchitecture analysis, memory access pattern optimization, pipeline stall diagnosis, and roofline model analysis.

## Triggers

- "How do I use Intel VTune to profile my code?"
- "What are pipeline stalls and how do I reduce them?"
- "How do I analyze memory bandwidth with VTune?"
- "What is the roofline model and how do I use it?"
- "How do I use AMD uProf as a free alternative to VTune?"
- "My code has good cache hit rates but is still slow"

## Workflow

### 1. VTune setup (free Community Edition)

```bash
# Download Intel VTune Profiler (Community Edition — free)
# https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/developer/tools/oneapi/vtune-profiler.html
# Install on Linux
source /opt/intel/oneapi/vtune/latest/env/vars.sh
# CLI usage
vtune -collect hotspots ./prog
vtune -collect microarchitecture-exploration ./prog
vtune -collect memory-access ./prog
# View results in GUI
vtune-gui &
# File → Open Result → select .vtune directory
# Or use amplxe-cl (legacy CLI)
amplxe-cl -collect hotspots ./prog
amplxe-cl -report hotspots -r result/
```

### 2. Analysis types

| Analysis | What it finds | When to use |
|----------|--------------|-------------|
| Hotspots | CPU-bound functions | First step — find where time is spent |
| Microarchitecture Exploration | IPC, pipeline stalls, retired instructions | After hotspot — why is the hotspot slow? |
| Memory Access | Cache misses, DRAM bandwidth, NUMA | Memory-bound code |
| Threading | Lock contention, parallel efficiency | Multithreaded code |
| HPC Performance | Vectorization, memory, roofline | HPC / scientific code |
| I/O | Disk and network bottlenecks | I/O-bound code |

### 3. Hotspot analysis

```bash
# Collect and report hotspots
vtune -collect hotspots -result-dir hotspots_result ./prog
# Report top functions by CPU time
