## What it does

The skill pulls quarterly institutional ownership changes from Financial Modeling Prep. `scripts/track_institutional_flow.py` screens stocks by minimum ownership change, holder count, sector and market cap, while `scripts/analyze_single_stock.py` digs into one ticker: an 8-quarter ownership trend, top 20 holders, concentration and a coverage-based reliability grade.

You need an FMP API key — set `FMP_API_KEY` or pass `--api-key` to the script. Python 3.9+ and the `requests` library are required. The free FMP tier allows 250 requests per day, enough to analyze 20-30 stocks per quarter.

13F filings land quarterly within 45 days of quarter end, so this is not a tool for intraday signals or horizons under 3 months, and micro-caps with thin institutional interest will give a patchy picture. A script for tracking a single fund's portfolio is not implemented: FMP groups holders by stock, not by institution, so to check whether a fund holds a ticker you search the `analyze_single_stock.py` output instead.

## When to use it
- check whether large funds agree with an investment thesis
- find stocks institutions have been accumulating for several quarters
- spot risk when holders exit a position in numbers
- review ownership trend and top-10 holder concentration
- monitor institutional support for current portfolio holdings

## Example prompts
- scan the top 50 stocks by institutional ownership change of at least 10%
- analyze AAPL institutional ownership over the last 8 quarters
- show Technology stocks held by at least 20 institutions

# Institutional Flow Tracker

## Overview

This skill tracks institutional investor activity through 13F SEC filings to identify "smart money" flows into and out of stocks. By analyzing quarterly changes in institutional ownership, you can discover stocks that sophisticated investors are accumulating before major price moves, or identify potential risks when institutions are reducing positions.

**Key Insight:** Institutional investors (hedge funds, pension funds, mutual funds) manage trillions of dollars and conduct extensive research. Their collective buying/selling patterns often precede significant price movements by 1-3 quarters.

## Prerequisites

- **FMP API Key:** Set `FMP_API_KEY` environment variable or pass `--api-key` to scripts
- **Python 3.9+:** Required for running analysis scripts
- **Dependencies:** `pip install requests` (scripts handle missing dependencies gracefully)

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Validating investment ideas (checking if smart money agrees with your thesis)
- Discovering new opportunities (finding stocks institutions are accumulating)
- Risk assessment (identifying stocks institutions are exiting)
- Portfolio monitoring (tracking institutional support for your holdings)
- Following specific investors (tracking Warren Buffett, Cathie Wood, etc.)
- Sector rotation analysis (identifying where institutions are rotating capital)

**Do NOT use when:**
- Seeking real-time intraday signals (13F data has 45-day reporting lag)
- Analyzing micro-cap stocks (<$100M market cap with limited institutional interest)
- Looking for short-term trading signals (<3 months horizon)

## Data Sources & Requirements

### Required: FMP API Key

This skill uses Financial Modeling Prep (FMP) API to access 13F filing data:

**Setup:**
```bash
# Set environment variable (preferred)
export FMP_API_KEY=your_key_here
# Or provide when running scripts
